Dear all,

https://nlnet.nl/PET/ has small grants to work on Free and Open Source
software (up to EUR 50,000).

The overall mission of the Next Generation Internet initiative is to
re-imagine and re-engineer the internet for the third millennium and
beyond to shape a value-centric, human and inclusive society for all.
How we share and retrieve information is an essential part of that
equation. The internet can and should bring out the best in all of us.
It should enable human potential, mobility and creativity at the
largest possible scale — while dealing responsibly with our natural
resources. Doing so is essential to preserve and expand the European
way of life. The Next Generation Internet initiative aims to mobilise
the best ideas to improve how we find and connect people, devices,
services and ideas.

You can see the list of approved projects of the previous round here:

    https://nlnet.nl/thema/NGIZeroPET.html

The application takes a few hours, but read the rules carefully and
take a cue by reading the approved project proposals. They are looking
for visible projects that have impact.

You may recognise one project

    https://nlnet.nl/project/GNUMes/

which we submitted during GNU Guix days in Brussels (congrats Jan!). I
think GNU projects are a great fit because they have global impact.

This time I think we can submit a GNU Guix project and also a GNU
Hurd project if anyone here is interested in hacking on that for a
while. Feel free to ping Ludo, Jan and me if you want to give it a
shot. If you have other project ideas you can run them by us too.

Pj.

Thanks a lot for sharing this, Pjotr, I'm thinking of applying for Next
browser! This could help a lot :)

Cheers!

Just a gentle reminder. This is an opportunity to get paid for work on
GNU Guix/Hurd. We can help submit a proposal. If you can state how we
can improve security on the internet and you have some traction in an
existing project it may be possible.

I just applied for Next, but I'd also be interested in applying for Guix
if that does not work out.

Did anyone else apply?

I wonder if I shall apply for Guix with one of these topics:

- GuixOp - abstraction layers for defining complex systems on a higher level

- Java: maven, gradle, many packages *shiffer* (also I'm not a Java
programmer)

- Android build system based on guix - and thus being reproducible (Ups,
this includes gradle)

- KDE/Plasma dektop (would be a smaller amount)

What do you think about these ideas? Any other ideas? What is the most
important one?

I'm personally applying with the following tasks:

- Integration with IPFS to allow distributing packages in a decentralized way.

- User services, to offer composable and programmable user
configurations, which can be shared between users.

- A graphical user interface for both the installation and the configuration /
package managerment, in the hope to make Guix more accessible to regular users.

Optionally:

- Integrate TeXlive properly.

- Add file search to Guix, so that a Guix can search packages by the file paths
  they contain.

Hard to make it fit into the “security” topic without a degree in
creative writing.

(Also: wip-texlive is getting us a good part of the way there. I know,
I know, …, but it really kinda does.)
