Hi,
Please write “gnu: Add Aegis.” in the summary line. “New variable” is
when referring to the variable itself in the ChangeLog part.

Remove “, which is not...”. :-)
The package itself cannot install things setuid (nothing can be setuid
in the store), but there can be setuid programs in the system (see
gnu/system.scm.)

OK to push with these changes.

Could you merge tempdir1 and tempdir2, as well as fixup1 and fixup2?
I could do. But I'm hoping that upstream will apply these patches.
So I'd rather keep them separate so that their maintainers can consider them on a
case by case basis, and to make our lives easier should they decide to apply some
but not the others.

OK, in that case that’s fine with me. (I thought about merging them
because the names suggest they do similar things.)

No.
The package manager itself doesn’t help at all with setuid binaries. It
just doesn’t handle them.
However, the OS does support it, via the ‘setuid-programs’ field of
‘operating-system’ declaration. So, if the system administrator of a
machine decides that it’s a good idea to have ‘aegis’ setuid-root, then
they add it to the ‘setuid-programs’ field.
The ‘%setuid-programs’ variable you mention is just for *default* setuid
programs. We don’t want to add to many of them here, because that
amounts to making installation of those packages compulsory.
HTH,
Ludo’.

The package manager itself doesn???t help at all with setuid binaries. It
just doesn???t handle them.
However, the OS does support it, via the ???setuid-programs??? field of
???operating-system??? declaration. So, if the system administrator of a
machine decides that it???s a good idea to have ???aegis??? setuid-root, then
they add it to the ???setuid-programs??? field.
The ???%setuid-programs??? variable you mention is just for *default* setuid
programs. We don???t want to add to many of them here, because that
amounts to making installation of those packages compulsory.
I see (I think). Could we at least arrange for a message to be emitted on
package --install suggesting that the package be added to setuid-programs?
Aegis is useless without setuid-root.

I suppose aegis itself emits such a message, no?

I suppose aegis itself emits such a message, no?
Yes and no.
The message it emits is :
aegis: There was no -LIBrary option specified. This is mandatory in "test" mode.
An experienced person knows that to get out of "test" mode, you need to
install it setuid root. But I suggest that less experienced persons would not.
Arguably this is deficiency of aegis itself. Their counter-argument would
probably be that if we choose not to install it the way described in the docs,
then we must be prepared to deal with the consequences.

That’s what I would say. After all, software is usually installable as
non-root, so when that doesn’t work, it should at least fail gracefully.

Normally, I would pass such comments onto the author for his response. However I
understand that the Aeigs author is very seriously ill, so under the circumstances
I am reluctant to do so.
