We are pleased to announce the GNU Shepherd version 0.6.1, a bug-fix
release.
• About
The GNU Daemon Shepherd or GNU Shepherd is a service manager written
in Guile that looks after the herd of system services. It provides a
replacement for the service-managing capabilities of SysV-init (or any
other init) with a dependency-based system with a convenient
interface. The GNU Shepherd may also be used by unprivileged users to
manage per-user daemons (e.g., tor, privoxy, mcron, etc.) It is
written in Guile Scheme, and is configured and extended using Guile.
The GNU Shepherd is developed jointly with the GNU Guix project; it is
used as the init system of Guix, GNU’s advanced GNU/Linux distribution.

[*] Use a .sig file to verify that the corresponding file (without the

and the corresponding tarball. Then, run a command like this:
gpg --verify shepherd-0.6.1.tar.gz.sig
If that command fails because you don't have the required public key,
then run this command to import it:
gpg --keyserver pool.sks-keyservers.net \
--recv-keys 3CE464558A84FDC69DB40CFB090B11993D9AEBB5
and rerun the 'gpg --verify' command.

Autoconf 2.69
Automake 1.16.1
Makeinfo 6.5
Help2man 1.47.8
• Changes since version 0.6.0 (excerpt from the NEWS file)
** ‘herd status’ distinguishes between “stopped” and “one-shot” services
** ‘read-pid-file’ gracefully handles PID files not created atomically
(<https://bugs.gnu.org/35550>)
** ‘shepherd’ no longer crashes when asked to load files with syntax errors
(<https://bugs.gnu.org/35631>)
** New translations: de, sk

Is there a tutorial about using shepherd for per-user daemons? I don’t
really know how to start with it, but I would very much like to
move services from "just start this in ~/.bashrc" to shepherd.
Best wishes,
Arne

There’s no tutorial, but the manual has a couple of examples, and I
think it’s rather easy to get started.
Cheers,
Ludo’.

Hi Ludo!
First, congrats!
I saw it describes that "intended for use on GNU/Hurd", is it still
workable on GNU/Linux?

Since that’s where it’s mainly used: definitely yes.
Best wishes,
Arne

Thanks Arne!
I'm still trying to find a way to get rid of systemd for a certain
purpose, that's great!
