How did it complain exactly?  Is it running as ‘root’, as per
<http://www.gnu.org/software/guix/manual/guix.html#Setting-Up-the-Daemon>?

The ability to run build processes in a chroot and under separate UIDs
is essential to achieve reproducibility.
