make check never finishes

The email below silently fails to send to help-guix@gnu.org.  It never posts 
to the mailing list and I receive no bounce message.

I am new to GNU Guix.  In my attempts to build Guix I run into a problem 
where `make check` never finishes.  The last check to complete is the 
following:

PASS: tests/guix-pack-localstatedir.sh

I think the problem happens while processing guix-pack-relocatable.sh.  
The final lines of guix-pack-relocatable.log are the following:


The following derivations will be built:
   
/gnu/store/6nbb5kb2wj2lja5s77qckvfnabsf786s-sed-tarball-pack.tar.gz.drv
   /gnu/store/xd5xhbpcgcmy1cvypw4qhag17gbll4lh-profile-directory.drv

So your messages are received and delivered to the list.  Maybe somebody
has fixed an issue in the meanwhile, but delays do sometimes happen
because of some different handshakes between the mail servers,
graylisting, or whatnot.

I cannot help you with the original issue about make check, sorry.

Sergiu,

Within a few minutes of my sending of the third email that was also sent to 
mailman@gnu.org all three emails went through, posting both to the archive at https://
lists.gnu.org/archive/html/help-guix/2023-05/threads.html[1] (none of them were there at 
the time I sent the third email) and coming back to me as a subscriber of the list.  They all 
posted with the original send time, leading me to believe that they were stuck in a queue 
somewhere.

18 hours is too long of a delay for any appropriately functioning graylist.  Even though I did 
not receive a reply back from mailman@gnu.org, the timing leads me to believe that 
someone read that email and fixed some configuration or filtering problem on the mailing 
list server.

proot-static fails to build. The issue has been reported upstream.
  https://github.com/proot-me/proot/issues/352

The recent 5.4.0 release fixes the hung tests but the previous issue
is still outstanding.
   https://github.com/proot-me/proot/commit/a5ee0b79001d4ca338a74b4259d12ad9e40a3a38

One workaround is to checkout the Guix source and configure a
development environment, disabling the proot tests locally. I
understand that this broken test may indicate a regression, but there
must be a better path forward than allowing this to linger for months
breaking Guix functionality.

I am curious if anyone else has successfully run make check recently.  If it 
works for other people, that would indicate that there is something amiss in 
my individual setup.  If it doesn’t work for other people that would indicate 
there is something amiss in guix-pack-relocatable.sh.

I gave it a try, and see the same thing for about the last hour.

There is also a directory
   /tmp/guix-build-proot-static-5.3.0.drv-0/
so indeed this package is tried to be built.

I have just interrupted it and then started by hand
   guix build /gnu/store/q323ryqh9wa4vinx8d0v3gqmw8lvv119-proot-static-5.3.0.drv
which gives more output.

It does a few tests and then hangs with 100% CPU time after
  CHECK	test-xxxxxxxx ok

Oh, it is a known issue, see here:
