This is just a release candidate, but it does boot the GuixSD release
image.

I'm sharing it so that people can get early access to the bug fixes it
includes.

-Subject: [PATCH] display: cirrus: ignore source pitch value as needed in
- blit_is_unsafe
-
-Commit 4299b90 added a check which is too broad, given that the source
-pitch value is not required to be initialized for solid fill operations.
-This patch refines the blit_is_unsafe() check to ignore source pitch in
-that case. After applying the above commit as a security patch, we
-noticed the SLES 11 SP4 guest gui failed to initialize properly.

-
-CCID device emulator uses Application Protocol Data Units(APDU)
-to exchange command and responses to and from the host.
-The length in these units couldn't be greater than 65536. Add
-check to ensure the same. It'd also avoid potential integer
-overflow in emulated_apdu_from_guest.

-Subject: [PATCH] virtio-crypto: fix possible integer and heap overflow
-
-Because the 'size_t' type is 4 bytes in 32-bit platform, which
-is the same with 'int'. It's easy to make 'max_len' to zero when
-integer overflow and then cause heap overflow if 'max_len' is zero.
-
-Using uint_64 instead of size_t to avoid the integer overflow.

I think it would be nice to have this in Guix proper (as a separate
variable), so users don't have to apply this patch and build it
manually. The downside is that it would land in users' profiles unless
they take steps to prevent it, but I'm not sure how much of a problem
that is given how easy it is to roll-back or exclude it. Thoughts?

I'm unsure if we should add it. QEMU usually goes through 4 or 5 release
candidates.

Does anyone have experience using these heavily? Are they stable or can
we expect them to be buggier than a real release?

If the release candidates quickly turn into a release, as one would
expect, then perhaps we can just wait for a few more days?

Thoughts?

It usually takes 1 or 2 months:

http://wiki.qemu-project.org/Main_Page#News

I didn't mean to add this release candidate to Guix, but I wanted to
make it available to whoever is interested — especially since I spent a
lot of time comparing my collection of bug reports against the 2.9.0-rc1
code to check what was and was not fixed :)

I think having it here in the mailing list archives is sufficient.

-Subject: [PATCH] usb: ccid: check ccid apdu length
-
-CCID device emulator uses Application Protocol Data Units(APDU)
-to exchange command and responses to and from the host.
-The length in these units couldn't be greater than 65536. Add
-check to ensure the same. It'd also avoid potential integer
-overflow in emulated_apdu_from_guest.
