As for the frame, GRUB 2 is supposed to be more flexible about the appearance of the elements in the screen. The frame can be removed and the boot options can be graphically enhanced. However, I'm using GRUB legacy appearance because, as far as I know, the theming features of GRUB 2 are still in development and may not be stable.
