Hi Guixers,

Is there a translation programm in Guix, you can use for offline 
translation?

So that you don't need an add-on or look for a translation programm on 
the web and enter there the sentence, you would like to translate

If you want to edit translation files in .po file format (as used by
Guix), I prefer <https://www.emacswiki.org/emacs/PoMode> that gets
mentioned in the Guix manual.  Alternatively there exist other programs
for PO files, like GNOME Translation Editor (“guix install
gtranslator”).

Some other software like KDE doesn’t use .po files though.

If by add-on, you mean Weblate, then you would first need to download
the .po file from Weblate.  It is important that you use the file from
Weblate or their Translation Project, *not* from the source code repo,
so you have the most current version.

I think Francis is talking about something more like a combination of Google translation and bilingual dictionaries?

If that's the case, I don't know of any options...

Neither do I know any particularly good tool. There was some work on
libre machine-learning-based translation engines, but the last time I
checked, none of them was actually usable to me - none supported Polish
and all had deps that were not available from APT (I was not yet using
Guix at that time).

You might have more luck than I did. But if you don't, you might
instead want to search for libre CAT (Computer Assisted Translation)
tools. Those are different from translators like Deepl and Google
Translate, they won't do the entire work for you. But they might be the
best way to go if you want to become independent of the proprietary
services.

Unfortunately, I don't myself know any particular libre CAT software
that I could recommend. I merely know such things exist

On these lines, the best option I’m aware of is the relatively new Mozilla Translate: https://github.com/mozilla/translate

I don’t think it’s been packaged for Guix yet, but I don’t know of any reason why it couldn’t be. The front-end demonstrated at https://mozilla.github.io/translate downloads language support files on-demand, but I think it could be patched to also package the models. Language support is not comprehensive, but it does include Polish.

Some of the underlying work is grouped under the Bergamot project: https://browser.mt Much of the substantive source code seems to be at: https://github.com/browsermt/bergamot-translator I think it would be easy (but I haven’t tried) to write a front-end in GTK, Qt, or similar instead of the HTML+JS front-end.

Do you enter text and than through this mode it can be translated?

After that you have to go through it,

Unfortunately, not. The PoMode Florian mentioned just makes emacs able
to understand the syntax of the .po text file format. That format is
used to keep translated (localized) strings of programs. The PoMode
assumes the translation is performed *manually* by the user. AFAIU it
does not feature *any* translation engine or even dictionary that could
help you. Sorry :/

text at all. So I don't need much more at the moment.

In Icedove DeepL has a GNU licence and can be used as an add-on.
In Icecat and Chromium DeepL has a proprietary licence, therefore it 
can't be used as an add-on.

So I am looking for something else.

I almost haven't used Emacs yet, so I even don't know how to set up 
something in emacs. May be the time will come...

I don't know what browser or email client add-ons for DeepL there are.
However, it seems all such gadgets just send the text to DeepL servers
for translation. Making it a nasty SaaS (service as a software
subsitute).

Btw, I don't want you to feel *nagged* by me to drop the Icedove addon
immediately. That's not how freesw community should work :) Tolerance
is important. I just wanted to clarify things

I'll just blindly repeat what has been suggested on this list by others
before. That profile updates like this are not reliable (as you see)
and a better approach is to use construct your profile by declaring the
package set using a manifest as described here[1].

I don't know the "Weblate" thing you wrote about at the end, so I
cannot help here

thanks for your answer.
I don't feel nagged.
I am here to learn.

I deleted the DeepL add-on.

I haven't set up a manifest yet, because it seems too difficult for me 
at the moment. I am a normal user and not a developer.

Sorry to say: As Luis Felipe wrote, I had completely misunderstood what
you meant by translation program.  gtranslator is of no use to you,
because it is a program for manual translation, not automatic
translation.
