Hi Guix,

I am not a musician.

I understand almost nothing about music.

But God gave me a song with two different texts.
One text is for praising God,
the second text for supporting Guix / free software,

which is my contribution to free software.

I don’t know much about the history of Guix,
so I beg your pardon,
if somebody dislikes the text
or if I have annoyed someone.
Changes are welcome.

An English native speaker,
or somebody who knows English well
and has some poetic and rhyming skills
can change the text to a nicer one.
Proposals are welcome, as it is in Guix:
teamwork brings the best results.

I put the song down in "Musescore 3.6.2"
and recorded it with "obs"

Beware, the notes are 1,5 Tones higher than written because of the capo
on the 3.fret.

When I opened it in frescobaldi, ly.file, there appeared strange chords.

I also exported it to a
midi file,
mkv file,
pdf.file,
ly.file,
mp4.file,

in order to listen to the melody,
if somebody like.

I created the song with a simply headset
(doesn't sound good,
but at least you can catch the melody).

I have no audio interface and don’t know how to use it in Guix.

You can check the song with the package:
"vlc (media player)",
"audacious",
"audacity broke down, when I started it.
in the terminal: "timidity Guix.mid"

I don’t know how it works with copyright,
I simply put "copyright GP" on the bottom,
(so that my name stays in the background).
Suggestions are welcome.

Somebody, who has a nice voice, can,
after may be changing the text,
record the song.

happy supporting Guix
Gottfried

To make it easier for others to make those kinds of changes or any
derivative work of your song, you can use, for example, a Creative
Commons license (https://creativecommons.org/). They provide a tool to
help you chose a license for your work:
https://chooser-beta.creativecommons.org/.

> I have no audio interface and don’t know how to use it in Guix.
Guix's blog has one post about music production that might be useful to
you: https://guix.gnu.org/en/blog/2020/music-production-on-guix-system/

Anyways, licensed or not, I appreciate your gesture with this song :)

Cheers,

thanks for helping me.

1.
I read through the creativecommons licence,
but I don’t understand all the implications and consequences
if I decide for this or for that.

It is too early for me to decide,

I have no experience in that sort of things.

2.
Probably nobody would like to change the music.

3.
If somebody has proposals to chance the text to a more appropriate one,
he can do that.
I would be happy about it, as I wrote, I am not an English speaker and I
don’t know the history of Guix.

There would be a possibility to add a 6.th verse about Scheme and Guile,
if somebody likes.
But then, the song would not fit any more to one page.

If somebody uses the new version of Musescore, at the moment: 4.2.
than the whole page would change and a fiddling around would be
necessary to put the song on one page.

If you export the song to Lilypond,
than the song does also not fit any more on one page.
I tried it, but Lilypond? did not adjust the guitar chords
because I used a "capo on the 3.fret".

So I don't know what to do at the moment.
How can I help somebody to change something?

Gottfried

You do appropriately present one view of Guix. There are various views
and ethics among Guix developers, regarding benefit/harm of Bitcoin for
example, but you name central aspects.

A CreativeCommons license would give permission to use your song in
other works like videos and perhaps permission to change it, depending
on which of the CreativeCommons licenses you choose precisely. Creative
Commons is a good idea for free art in general.

Florian

I hoped to listen to your song again, but the Tuxedo page is no longer
accessible. Did you upload the song somewhere else? Thanks!

Kind regards
Felix

Hi Felix,

thanks for bringing it to my attention.

I didn't do anything, I shared it for one month.
But there must have been a change.

I shared the files again.
hopefully it will work.

Gottfried

Hi Gottfried,

I think your your song is a super unique contribution in the Guix
community, but we cannot do much with it other than listen to it
privately.

Per Wikipedia, copyright law gives you "the exclusive ... right to copy,
distribute, adapt, display, and perform." [1]

The word "exclusive" means "nobody but you". For example, I cannot play
your song at a Guix meeting without a license from you. I can also not
adapt it for piano and sing it in public, nor can I make my version
available on the internet---no audio, no written score..

There are a lot of resources for artists about licensing. Folks like
Felipe, who designed the Guix logo, could probably give you a quick
intro into popular, off-the-shelf licensing options.

I have no legal training, so please do not rely on my comments here.
Please consult a competent attorney instead.

> I simply put "copyright GP" on the bottom,

You may wish use your real name. Then no one with the same initials can
later claim they wrote your song.

I also see calendar years mentioned in a lot of copyright notices.
That's probably because opyright lasts for a long time. I think in
Austria it might be your life plus seventy years. [2]

Just something to think about when you have some free time. I know you
like music, so perhaps it's worth your time.

Thanks again for the song!

Kind regards
Felix
