Is /usr/lib/ocaml/METAS referenced somewhere in the sources you're
trying to build?

Maybe you could try setting these environment variables:
OCAMLFIND_DESTDIR=3D<somewhere>
and
OCAMLFIND_LDCONF=3Dignore

that's what we do in the dune-build-system.
