Two question relating to backup:

1) In terms of backing up GuixSD, which files do I need to worry about?
(setting aside local data and application settings and so)

So far, I'm backing up:
/etc/config.scm
/var/guix/profiles/
~/.config/

2) I don't seem to be able to install `libchip` (for chop-backup). It
seems to have no substitute binaries and the local build fails. I've
fallen back to using Borg backup for now (which seems good, but more
fragile than I'd like, especially in terms of setting up automated bash scripts).

1) If you don't want to keep generations you don't have to: then no need to save
/var/guix/profiles or ~/.config/guix.
I personally skip them and only keep the formatted output of `guix package
--list-installed` under version control.
Note that /etc/config.scm can be stored anywhere, it does not have to be in
/etc/.

2) I don't use libchip, so I don't know. How does it fail? Can you provide the
backtrace?
Beside borg, other solutions include restic and duplicity.

This build fails since nearly two years! It seams like nobody is using
(and thus complaining) this software:

https://hydra.gnu.org/job/gnu/master/libchop-0.5.2.x86_64-linux/all

I opened a bug for this:

https://debbugs.gnu.org/cgi/bugreport.cgi?bug=32382

Thanks for reporting. Do you have an idea on how to fix it?

Björn

Ludovic fixed the package, so if you do a

guix pull && guix package -i libchop

it should be working now.

But he also wrote that libchop is unmaintained (and what I didn't know:
he's the author :-)).

Thanks, Björn. I knew Ludovic was the author (I think it was connected
with his PhD research?) and am interested because of the use of Guile
(it would be nice to have a backup system that has a Lisp-type
interface). Thanks also for the warning about the unmaintainedness of
libchop (and indeed a very quick trial suggests it may not be working,
though I'll have to try more extensively).
