I'm currently packaging MATE, but I'm not a very well experienced
user of MATE. I'm used to modular systems where you can reuse
applications outside of their bigger projects.

gnome-terminal can in theory be used in other WMs and DMs aswell.
Except that with mate-terminal I had issues in a spectrwm - only system.
In addition to "bug#28088: "The name org.a11y.Bus was not provided by any .service files" with multiple applications"
I get this in GNOME (where 28088 is a non-issue):

user@abyayala ~$ mate-terminal

(mate-terminal:841): GLib-GIO-ERROR **: Settings schema 'org.mate.interface' is not installed

Trace/breakpoint trap

I assume I might still lack an application in the graph though.. I have the very
base of MATE now, and the test with MATE is with only mate itself being
present.

The very base seems to be:
mate-desktop, mate-menus, mate-panel, mate-session-manager
mate-settings-daemon, marco, and optionally(?)
caja, mate-control-center, mate-media,
mozo, mate-terminal.

But I only experience issues with mate-terminal for now.. Marco/the WM itself
is another issue.

This is what I have:

Various sources suggest either of the following:

- mate applications require many dependencies within MATE.
- I need mate-utils which I haven't packaged yet

I'll try mate-utils.

Okay, this is where I need help as mate-utils depends on
mate-panel which I have kind-of-packaged - it is supposedly
finished (build phase succeeds) but crashes because I need to
figure out how to replicate this for Guix:

    sed -i -e 's/ -shared / -Wl,-O1,--as-needed\0/g' libtool

Anyone got an idea? mate-utils probably requires me to do the same.
It's easy when you can do it in a Makefile, but I have no idea
right now how to adjust my package to this.

I believe you need to use glib-or-gtk-build-system instead of
gnu-build-system. That will make sure that binaries built by your
packages have wrappers that set environment variables ensuring that the
program's schemas are visible to the program.

Brilliant! This fixed caja for starters. Many thanks!
Alright. I'm really positive we can have MATE soon.
