For practical reasons, I think that we need to try our best to interpret each others' messages charitably. Communicating tone and emotion through the English language is hard enough for those of us who learned it as our first language. There are a handful of professional writers who have mastered this art, and they earn a lot of money for it. The rest of us, myself included, have to accept that we will sometimes be misinterpreted, and that we will sometimes misinterpret others. So, I hope we can remember our common goal, give the benefit of the doubt, and try to let perceived slights slide, since they may not have even been intended in the first place. Like I said, communicating tone effectively through written language is very hard, at least with English.
