Hello!

Should we create a help-guix@gnu.org mailing list specifically to answer
user questions?

Until recently, the community was very small and users were also active
developers, but we’re reaching the point where that may no longer be
true (hey!).  People could ask for help on guix-devel@gnu.org, but some
might be reluctant to doing that when they see that most messages relate
to patch reviews and more or less intricate development topics.

Thoughts?

I would agree with this, but we already have bug-guix@gnu.org.

Initially I thought, "why not guix-user@gnu.org?"  But after thinking
about it, I like guix-help@gnu.org, keeping with the goal that we want
all users to have the opportunity to become contributors :)

Yes, {help,bug,info}-FOO@gnu.org is standard and we cannot change it.

I don't think there is a guideline, but there is tradition (sometimes
not followed) of conventional names for GNU mailing lists, which are:

  info-FOO@gnu.org  help-FOO@gnu.org  bug-FOO@gnu.org  FOO-devel@gnu.org

mailing lists.

I agree that such name might feel more “natural” in some sense.
Nonetheless I don't think it makes sense to break a convention for such
little benefit.

So I encourage everyone to stop following their mood of the day in
regards of choosing a name.  Please!  :)

Yes, this is all described in the GNU maintainers guide:

  http://www.gnu.org/prep/maintain/html_node/Standard-Mailing-Lists.html

In fact, Savannah enforces/encourages that convention for GNU packages.

My initial question was more about whether it would make sense to create
such a list, rather than how to call it.  Sorry for being unclear!

guix-artwork.git).  The main page mentions help-guix instead of
guix-devel in the bottom section.
