I also think it should be part of the version.  They may release a
non-alpha 0.5 version, and having it in the version makes the alpha
quality more apparent to a user browsing 'guix package -A'.

I'm not sure, but I doubt there will be a "0.5beta" or so?  What do
others think?

I had a look at the subversion repository; the version before seems to be
called "0.3alpha". So it looks like the "alpha" is just an additional
warning tag, and not a pre-version for a final version with the same number.
So I would suggest you push without the "alpha" in the version.
