Concerning x.org, I am making some progress: The files missing on ftp are
actually available on the http servers, as found out through #xorg-devel.
Now I am trying to compile a few packages and need to add some
dependencies. The following happens for xlsatoms during the configure
phase:
Package xorg-macros was not found in the pkg-config search path.
Perhaps you should add the directory containing `xorg-macros.pc'
to the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable
No package 'xorg-macros' found
The file xorg-macros.pc is contained in the input util-macros, but not
referenced in PKG_CONFIG_PATH:
export PKG_CONFIG_PATH="/nix/store/ps4d74mwhawnlcbn95lbnwcvz0mc1892-
libxcb-1.8.1/lib/pkgconfig:/nix/store/bq361v58rl2p7dv0npf7hdsnhjlbk2p8-
xz-5.0.4/lib/pkgconfig"
This is because it is not contained in a subdirectory lib/pkgconfig, but in
share/pkgconfig. Should we add "share/pkgconfig" to the lines
(set-path-environment-variable "PKG_CONFIG_PATH"
'("lib/pkgconfig" "lib64/pkgconfig")
in guix/build/gnu-build-system.scm in the core-updates branch?

Yes, it’s non-conventional, but it won’t hurt to add it.

Done; it seems to be the convention with the xorg packages.
This leaves me in a slight mess with my xorg branch, which was based on
master, and which now needs core-updates. So the xorg branch contains
modifications in master that are not in core-updates, and simply rebasing
it on core-updates does not work. Shall we merge master into core-updates
again? Will we merge back core-updates any time soon?

Thanks.

Yes. Feel free to do it, if you want.

There are a few things to address IMO before we can do that: install
glibc’s timezone and locales, add a few things to (guix build utils)
from TODO, and perhaps add cross-compilation support. That could take
two or three weeks.
What about making an xorg branch on top of current core-updates? You
could regularly merge from core-updates as you see fit, without being
disturbed by unrelated changes there.
Thanks,
Ludo’.
