Before that '.log' files for scheme tests were fragmented and not
included in test-suite.log. This unifies the semantics of SRFI-64 API
with Automake test suite.
* build-aux/test-driver.scm: New file.
* Makefile.am (SCM_LOG_DRIVER, AM_SCM_LOG_DRIVER_FLAGS): New variables.
(SCM_LOG_COMPILER, AM_SCM_LOG_FLAGS): Delete variables.
(AM_TESTS_ENVIRONMENT): Set GUILE_AUTO_COMPILE to 0.
* doc/guix.texi (Running the Test Suite): Describe how to display the
detailed results. Bug reports don't require including additional '.log'
files.
* tests/base32.scm, tests/build-utils.scm, tests/builders.scm,
tests/challenge.scm, tests/cpan.scm, tests/cpio.scm, tests/cran.scm,
tests/cve.scm, tests/derivations.scm, tests/elpa.scm,

tests/ui.scm, tests/union.scm, tests/utils.scm: Don't exit at the end of

* tests/containers.scm: Likewise. Use 'test-skip' instead of exiting
with error code 77.

I notice in the test-suite.log that logs are included from tests that
are skipped. This seems appropriate, but it appears to also include
PASS output from other tests in that suite (e.g. all of tests/gexp.log
is included since two of the 49 tests are skipp). Is it possible to
include output from only the skipped tests? I'm not familiar for the
trs spec.
Thanks for this work. I had considered reworking the test suites with
Autoconf's AutoTest for better unity, but I think what you've done here
is quite a bit more elegant with less disruption.

If you have a recent Guile version (>= 2.0.9) SRFI-64 is already
included and should be used without falling back to Guix embedded copy.
I have only tested with Guile 2.0.11 (from Debian) so I guess this
problem is appearing when using Guile from Guix.
Maybe 'Makefile.am' should include something like:
--8<---------------cut here---------------start------------->8---
if !HAVE_SRFI_64
GOBJECTS += srfi/srfi-64.go srfi/srfi-64.upstream.go
endif
--8<---------------cut here---------------end--------------->8---
with some m4 magic to define AM_CONDITIONAL([HAVE_SRFI_64], ... ) when
srfi-64 is found in Guile. :)

I don't have the "terminated" message on my system. Does it appear for
all the tests? If not, can you identify what tests are creating those
messages? (by launching ‘make check TESTS="tests/suspect.scm"’).

Yes, every individual test case is included in the summary.

It is not possible unfortunately. The '.trs' files have only a
':copy-in-global-log:' field which defines if the corresponding '.log'
file is copied verbatim in test-suite.log or not.

I should learn how to use AutoTest. Thanks for your review and your
kind words.

Awesome! FYI I’m delaying review until after the release, hope that’s
fine! (I’m slightly concerned about losing the stdout/stderr of
guix-daemon and others, but I haven’t looked closely yet.)

I’m looking at it now. My first question is whether we could avoid
silencing everything?
I guess I got used to having an extra .log file containing “noise”, in
addition to the well-formatted .log file, and it’s proved useful on a
few occasions.
Cheers,

On closer inspection, this is awesome. :-)
I withdraw my comment about losing some of the “noise” since all we’re
losing is pointless info, and we still have the “useful noise” (like
‘pk’ output) in those nicely structured log files. So I’m happy!
‘make recheck’ still works; it still reruns the whole file (even if only
one test within the file failed), which is surprising but OK and
probably unavoidable given how SRFI-64 works.
The only things I would change is the attached patch: the change to
‘test-env’ removes the “Terminated” messages that Eric mentioned, the
rest improves a docstring in ‘test-driver.scm’ and uses the common
convention for Boolean variables.
If you can integrate something along these lines, then please merge!
I hereby dub you Automake Wizard.
Thank you!
Ludo’.

Indeed, that would be great and desirable to have all the extra
information in the log file. 'build-aux/test-driver' achieves it by
simply forking and redirecting stdout and stderr to the log file, like
this:
--8<---------------cut here---------------start------------->8---
# Test script is run here.
"$@" >$log_file 2>&1
estatus=$?
--8<---------------cut here---------------end--------------->8---
I don't know if it is possible to replicate a redirection of all the
error noises without forking the process. for now I am using something
similar to this:
(let ((log (open-output-file "tests/foo.log")))
(parameterize ((current-output-port log)
(current-error-port log)
(current-warning-port log))
(load-from-path "tests/foo.scm")
...))
But for example if tests/foo.scm calls ‘system’, the output will be
displayed to the terminal not to the log file. Do you know a way to fix
that?
If forking is the only option then the child process would still require
access to the parent's stdout directly or by an IPC in order to display
the short tests results:
SKIP: tests/base32.scm
PASS: tests/base64.scm
...

Indeed, I’ve thought about it, but in fact most or all of the “useful
noise” happens via ‘current-output-port’ and ‘current-error-port’, so
we’re not losing much.
If we want a 100% solution that works with child processes (like
‘cpio’), we should redirect the underlying file descriptors instead of
the ports:
(let ((log (open-output-file "tests/foo.log" "w0"))) ;unbuffered
(redirect-port (current-output-port) log)
(redirect-port (current-error-port) log)
;; …
)
I haven’t tried, but it should do the job. (If it doesn’t, ‘close-fdes’
+ ‘dup2’ would certainly work.)
If you take this route, then the patches that silence ‘cpio’ and
‘nix-hash’ are probably no longer needed. Up to you!
Thanks,
Ludo’.

I will look into this. I think making it robust and reliable for
general usage is important since it is intended to be used outside of
Guix too. So I prefer having a 100% solution.

OK I will drop them if possible.
I will work on Automake Guile compilation support after my exams in May
and pray for Ralf Wildenhues return!
Thank you very much for your review, your support and your kind words.

Using ‘redirect-port’ has worked perfectly. Thanks.
