Hi,
I can’t scan with my HP OfficeJet printer all-in-one in Guix.
When opening the "Enlightenment Desktop"
it gives me this message after trying to scan:
/gnu/store/sw1j2kavizxwj7sc51p83nwrfdvm6xj4-hplip-3.33.10/bin/hp-toolbox
was broken due to a segmentation error.
in German:
/gnu/store/sw1j2kavizxwj7sc51p83nwrfdvm6xj4-hplip-3.33.10/bin/hp-toolbox
wurde durch einen Segmentierungsfehler unterbrochen.
When I want to open the program "HP Device Manager" through klicking in
my Start Menu
it flashes for a quarter of a second (it wants to open) and shows
something (but too short to see what), but than it dissapears.
Could it be a hplip problem?
Any thoughts?
Kind regards
Gottfried

I recommend against using hplip, if that's where that's from. I would
instead search the SANE database [1] for your device and use libsane
directly.

Hi,
thanks for helping me.
I have installed SANE in my config.scm

> (inherit config)
> (extra-options (list "--gc-keep-derivations=yes" "--gc-keep-outputs=yes"))))

and also I installed some packages like
xsane, sane-backends, sane-airscan, scanbd
I checked the SANE database and it seems that my printer is not
supported, because of the older version of SANE in Guix.
May be this is the problem.
How would be the command to use libsane directly in the terminal?
Kind regards
Gottfried

Some HP printers *require* a proprietary plugin to scan. In my case (LaserJet Pro MFP M127fw), I can print without hplip, but not scan.
But I'm using guix on a foreign (Debian) system, and haven't managed to set up hplip-plugin (from nonguix) yet.
There is a list of which printers require the plugin at
https://developers.hp.com/hp-linux-imaging-and-printing/binary_plugin.html
My guess (and it is only a guess) would be that you will not have any luck with libsane if your printer shows up on that list.

I think the command to list the detected scanners is 'scanimage -L'
but my memory isn't perfect. It would be best to consult the
documentation.
Kind regards

Hi,
thank you very much. It was the right command.

but it didn’t find a scanner:

it found a usb scanner, but could not fetch string descriptor.
1.
does this message say that proprietary software is the problem?

2.
Can I read documentation with the terminal, having no documentation on
paper? Which commands I have to use?
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Kind regards
Gottfried

Not sure where you got that 3.33.10 version; the current one in Guix is
3.22.10.
I used it recently, had to patch wheer it looked its hp.conf, but it
seemed to mostly work (I needed to install cups for 'lp').
