Those are usable outside a gnome session. I got the idea that Guix could offer XFCE as a replacement for GNOME: instead of gnome-shell the XFCE stuff (xfdesktop, etc.). Of course, one could complain that no XFCE applications are provided. That could be fixed to package the basic XFCE programs as well (thunar, terminal, etc.).
