internet connection freezes

Hi,

when I am using the laptop a long time, several hours, also in cases 
when I take a brake of some minutes
the internet connection freezes
and there is no way to get it back,
even restarting icedove or icecat.
The only possibility is to restart the laptop.

Is there a command to restart the internet connection,
so that I don’t have to restart the laptop?

Assuming you have a fairly conventional networking setup, here you go:

  sudo herd restart networking

If that doesn't work, maybe try this (not sure if it'll make a
difference, though):

  sudo herd restart wpa-supplicant

Is your system using NetworkManager service or is the networking
configured statically? In case of the former (which is a typical setup
for casual desktop users), what desktop environment are you using? Does
it provide some frontend for NetworkManager with which network
connections can be configures? I think all the bigger, user-friendly
desktop environments do so by default. The gui for configuring
connections is commonly available by clicking on its icon somewhere.

Some desktops (also depending on how they were packaged) might leave
such networking gui for the user to set up, tho.

Anyway, if you just want to restart the *thing* responsible for
managing connections, you can try `sudo herd restart network-manager`.

Note: I'm mostly using Guix on a foreign distro hence I might be
missing something in what I wrote

I have the same problem, but I don’t know a solution. I have the problem
since I replaced my old CPU with a new Ryzen.

Hi,

I apologize for my first message, it was not clear.
I should have mentioned to replace <connection name> with the actual 
name of the connection (as listed by `nmcli connection`).

Sometimes, my wifi connection (handled by network manager) gets 
whimsical and the suggested command fixes it.


However, it does not apply in your case, sorry.

Sorry, this command I suggested (`sudo herd restart network-manager`)
was incorrect. The one given by Paren, `sudo herd restart networking`,
is the right one. Try it.

Arnaud surely wanted you to replace the "<connection name>" part with
the name of an actual connection on your system.

It seems a bridge (aka a virtual connection) under the name "virbr0"
somehow got created on your system. You could try running

    nmcli connection down virbr0 &&
      nmcli connection up enp53s0

Alternatively, you could even try

    sudo ip link del virbr0

to remove this mysterious virtual bridge instead of disabling it

Not even a button to turn it off? Perhaps there's at least some helpful
context menu available when right-clicking?

I guess it tells you that WiFi is enabled in software but also that no
WiFi hardware is available to Network Manager. Which means it's not
going to use WiFi anyway. If you want to also disable WiFi in software
(only practically useful when Network Manager has access to some WiFi
hardware), you can run

    nmcli radio wifi off

as per nmcli's manpage.

I didn’t change anything on my laptop or on the ethernet settings etc.

and earlier I didn’t have this problem

It appeared since some weeks and is a new problem.

That’s why I think there should be a solution

Have you by any chance installed/used some virtual machine emulators
recently? Qemu or something similar? The internet suggests the
problematic virbr0 may be created by libvirt which is a dependency of
Qemu.

IIUC, virbr0 is sort of a virtual internet "connection" created
specifically for communication with one's virtual machine(s). Here it
seems Network Manager is confusing virbr0 for the true connection that
it is meant to bring up

This might be related to the NetworkManager bug the popped up a few
weeks ago, in which case a restart won't help, but mucking around in
nmtui or nm-applet might.
