I have copied in /etc/nsswitch.conf in a prior attempt at fixing the inability to connect, as it was missing. Now I have one there from a desktop GuixSD, but doesn't make a difference. It contains:
group: files
hosts: files mdns_minimal [NOTFOUND=return] dns mdns
networks: files dns [!UNAVAIL=return]
passwd: files
shadow: files
