This was previously running=20 Debian, but I wiped it to put Guix on, by running `sudo dd=20 if=3D/dev/urandom of=3D/dev/nvme0n1 bs=3D1M'. After the Guix install,=20 the laptop doesn=E2=80=99t boot -- the firmware shows a boot device=20 selection menu, rather than bootint into Guix. The only entry is=20 the internal NVMe SSD, and choosing it does nothing -- the=20 firmware can=E2=80=99t figure out how to boot from it. I tried two other=20 third-party installers based on Guix 1.4.0, and got the same=20 result. The installer boots and runs fine, the install process=20 appears to succeed, but after restarting, the machine doesn=E2=80=99t=20 boot. This is a very vanilla setup. I used the graphical Guix=20 installer, let it partition things, and have one partition for=20 everything. I have no other OS on this computer, I=E2=80=99m not=20 dual-booting, net-booting, or anything else exotic. Secure boot is disabled in the BIOS. I tried updating the firmware on the laptop and restoring it to=20 the default settings -- no change. I tried wiping the partition table again, but using /dev/zero --=20 no change. If I boot the installer image and drop into its GRUB menu, I can=20 chainload GRUB off the internal SSD=E2=80=99s ESP, which lets me boot=20 Guix. So the installation itself is fine, but the bootloader is=20 broken. After booting this way, I tried `guix pull' and `sudo=20 guix system reconfigure /etc/config.scm'. This also didn=E2=80=99t work=20 -- the machine still will not boot. After digging in the ESP, I thought I=E2=80=99d found a clue: the GRUB=20 payload is placed at /EFI/Guix/grubx64.efi, and there=E2=80=99s no=20 /EFI/BOOT/BOOTX64.EFI, which is typically what a UEFI platform=20 would look for to begin booting the OS. But! My existing Guix=20 machine (a ThinkPad X13 Gen 2 AMD) *does* boot, but *doesn=E2=80=99t* have= =20 a /EFI/BOOT/BOOTX64.EFI payload, either. My Debian machine has=20 /EFI/BOOT/BOOTX64.EFI as well as /EFI/debian/grubx64.efi -- both=20 files have identical contents per sha256sum. But but! The X13=20 *also* has some Debian files in the ESP, so it=E2=80=99s not 100%=20 identical to the L390. Not sure how those got there. It=E2=80=99s also a= =20 former Debian box, but I wiped it, and am surprised to see=20 anything remaining from that. My only hypothesis around this is that perhaps the EFI variables=20 are messed up, and resetting BIOS settings doesn=E2=80=99t clear them.=20 That might make the BIOS do something weird in its boot process;=20 or make GRUB think some other OS is installed, and install the=20 bootloader wrong for a single-OS setup. Does anyone have any suggestions or advice? Needing a USB stick=20 to boot the machine is a pain. Thanks, =E2=80=94 Ian
