Hi Guixers,

if I install hpcguix-web and add it in my config.scm

what is the difference and the benefits to look up my packages in the
browser
https://hpc.guix.info/browse?

Is it worth to install it?
What are the advantages?

thanks for your answers

Gottfried

The primary purpose for this is visibility and outreach. People who
don’t use Guix yet can see what packages the latest version of Guix has
to offer. We’re using it for the Guix HPC project, which is a project
to popularize Guix in scientific computing environments.

You can get the same information on the command line or with the Emacs
interface. There is no other advantage.

Out of my curiosity, why the command line “guix search” is not enough?

For example,

    guix search python tenso

Note that the matches are then underlined.

If you know part of the name, you can use “guix package -A”. For
example,

    guix package -A | grep ^python | grep torc

Last, the package emacs-guix provides an interface for Emacs. For
example,

guix shell emacs emacs-guix -- emacs

then M-x guix then type p and pick how you want to search. Note that
this package emacs-guix is not well-maintained so it is possible that
some features are broken.

Hope that helps,
simon
