From the Wiki, it looks like Gnus supports Authinfo. [1] (For non-NNTP
tasks, I personally use Mu4e and Circe, which definitely do.) Did you
put .authinfo.gpg into /home or into $HOME?
The latter would result in a location like /home/gfp/.authinfo.gpg.
