…or if you mean that you're unsure how to build a non-exported 
variable (without define-public):

  ~/guix$ ./pre-inst-env guix build -e \
              '(@@ (gnu packages file-systems) jfs_fsck/static)'

Note that this takes the variable, not the package, name.
