Hi,
which package is useful and easy to use to convert and resize images in
Guix?
I mean to reduce the size of the photo.

The programme : converseen (image converter and resizer) is not packed
for Guix.
So I am looking for an other one.

Kind regards

Gottfried

The generic way to manipulate images in Linux (especially with
scripts) is probably imagemagick, but your time is probably better
spent learning GIMP, if you haven't. It's great!

Hi, Gottfried.

You can use imagemagick or GIMP. You can find examples of resizing in
the following links:

  * https://imagemagick.org/Usage/resize/
  * https://www.gimp.org/tutorials/GIMP_Quickies/

They can also convert between formats and many more things.

Hope that helps,

Actually, Felipe knows a lot more about images in Guix. He designed
most of the artwork for Guix. All of it is exceptional!

It is Gottfried's privilege, dear Felipe, to receive your response;
and mine to have a modest piece of advice to be confirmed so quickly
by an expert!

Gottfried, meet Felipe!

Hi,

thanks for the answer

I heard gimp is a big programme,
and of course I can install it,
but I thought
I don’t need such a big programme
because to learn it takes a lot of time,
and I don’t want to spend much time for learning it now,
because I don’t need it for the moment.

I need only a small programme
to convert images to a smaller size. (image converter and resizer)

I installed converseen on an other laptop in Trisquel
and it works.
converseen can resize more images at once.

Imagemagick can only one image resize at once.

Can gimp resize more images at once?

Kind regards

Gottfried

Ah, I see now that converseen is a graphical program for batch
processing of images. I'm not aware of any equivalent program in Guix.

No, it does batch processing as well. I don't know what's your exact
need, but there is an example of batch resizing in
https://stackoverflow.com/questions/56305138/.

From a quick search on the Web, it seems it can, but apparently not as
straightforwardly as with converseen.

Hi,

thanks very much for your help.

I prefer a graphical programme,
at the moment it is easier for me.

AFAIU imagemagick is a commandline programme.
In trisquel I can use imagemagick as a graphical programme.

In Guix there is no package: "imagemagick"

only: "perl-image-magick 6.89"

Is this the package in Guix for using imagemagick via commandline?

There is another package in Guix for the commandline:
"imgp"

but as I said, I prefer a graphical programme,
so may be "gimp" is the solution.

Kind regards

Gottfried

guix build imagemagick

I had a quick look at converseen. It requires the qtlinguist package,
which we do not have in Guix.

qtlinguist belongs to qttools, doesn't it?

The main issue in properly packaging converseen is, IMO, to remove the
(auto)update code all over the place.

For the record, here's a draft, without the check updates cleanup:

--8<---------------cut here---------------start------------->8---

Gottfried, I think the program called photoflare might be close to what
you want. Try the following:

 1. guix install photoflare
 2. Start the program
 3. In the main menu, go to Tools → Automate/Batch...

You will see a new window opens where you can select all the files you
want to transform, the transformations you'd like to apply, the folder
where you want to save the results, and so on.

Using the GIMP graphically for the same purpose seems to require a
plugin that is not in Guix
(https://github.com/alessandrofrancesconi/gimp-plugin-bimp/).

Hope that helps.

Hi,

I was checking on the guix website among packages,
but the package imagemagick didn’t exist there.

So how did you know that it is there?

Or are there additional packages which are not mentioned there,
but you can build them?

Kind regards

Gottfried

Hi,

thanks for your help.

converseen is a nice and easy to use programme,
in which you can convert an image/picture/photo with some klicks.

And also many images at once.

You simply choose/load all the images, tick them,

and with one other tick you convert all of them at once
in choosing beforehand how much and to what kind you would like to
convert them.

So if it doesn’t take too much time for somebody to build it for Guix
I would be happy.

Kind regards

Gottfried

The package is definitely there.
https://packages.guix.gnu.org/search/?query=imagemagick

Did you maybe type the wrong name, maybe "magik" instead of "magick"?

Not a proper upstreamable package yet, but you can build it locally in a
few minutes:

Hi,
thanks for your help.

> Did you maybe type the wrong name, maybe "magik" instead of "magick"?

This could be, even I tried several times and checked the name.

I created a manifest with photoflare and imagemagick
and both packages were installed.

When I enter this profil
I can open photoflare,
but I can’t open imagemagick.
bash doesn’t find it.

I don’t know why.

I still installed:
julia-imagemagick
julia-imagemagick-jll

but still I can’t open it.

Kind regards

Gottfried

Those are for the Julia language, they are not what you want installed.
Use the package named "imagemagick".

If it still doesn't show up, that might be a bug. I've ran into some
weird behavior where packages are reported as installed but aren't
visible in the profile. But so far it hasn't happened with guix shell
profiles.

Watch out, it probably does not appear in the desktop environment,
and it contains lots of commands with different names. You can do
something like this:

$ guix build imagemagick
/gnu/store/gxggf8rsxd6l3rxi90d8qgsllzav1ycn-imagemagick-6.9.12-4-doc
/gnu/store/0b9yq69kk25si62rcaixx2c0ir6n5xvj-imagemagick-6.9.12-4
$ ls /gnu/store/0b9yq69kk25si62rcaixx2c0ir6n5xvj-imagemagick-6.9.12-4/bin
animate composite convert identify Magick++-config MagickCore-config mogrify stream
compare conjure display import Magick-config MagickWand-config montage Wand-config
to see the commands.

For instance,
   display xyz.jpg
typed on the command line shows the image, and so on. The user interface
(key bindings, mouse behaviour) is also a bit strange (this dates from
decades ago).

Hi,

thanks for your help

may be imagemagick can be used only in the command line
but I hoped to be graphical, as I know it from Trisquel.

Or can it be that I have first to do a:
sudo guix system reconfigure /etc/config.scm
before it works properly.
But photoflare is working graphically,
without doing a sudo guix system reconfigure /etc/config.scm

How is it generally:

If I create a new profile, it should work
or do I have to do than a
sudo guix system reconfigure /etc/config.scm
so that everything is in place and it works properly?

kind regards

Gottfried

Hi,

thanks very much,

imagemagick is working

when opening my profile, where I installed imagemagick

and I type
display xyz.jpg

than the image of imagemagick shows up

and with left and richt mouse clicks different menus show up

so it is possible to use it in a graphical way.

of course there are command line commands to use it,
I
but to learn that doesn’t make sense to me.
I can use it in a graphical way, will be quicker for me.

So thanks for helping me.

scrolling down the email are the commands for using imagemagick on the
command line

kind regards

Gottfried

image type as the filename suffix (i.e. image.ps). Specify 'file' as
'-' for standard input or output.

Hi,

thank you very much for packing "converseen"

Now it is an "upstreamable package"

Kind regards

Gottfried
