It seems I'm unable to upgrade installed packages with Guix. Below is the
output from the terminal. As you see I first tried to get the latest Guix
before upgrading. Is this an necessary step?
In any case, it was unsuccessful too. I don't believe I've ever been able
to
upgrade packages. I've only trieda few times from memory. Before today I
did
try the --fallback option as the error messages suggest but it seemed to be
downloading many files and as I was unsure what it was actually doing I
abandoned it.

If you get 404 responses during `guix pull`, please let us know, since
--fallback is not yet implemented for `guix pull`.
For other commands that return 404 from our servers, you can either use
--fallback (build from source) and wait ~5 minutes, which is about how
long it takes for the mirror to populate itself after the first request
for some resource.

Finally fixed!
https://git.savannah.gnu.org/cgit/guix.git/commit/?id=4902d3c4e0376974356481f222583580b49f39e1
So once you have successfully run “guix pull”, you’ll have a “guix pull”
that honors --fallback…

Putting this back on the list as I mistakenly only hit reply in my last mail. I
hope this okay.

So as I'm running Guix 20170414.08 I don't believe I have a recent enough
version for option 1. In any case, option 2 is still unsuccessful for
me too though
I didn't record the output on this occasion. I suspect at this point I
did something wrong
in my use of Guix. Is there a way to cleanly remove and re-install
Guix. I don't mind as I
only have a handful of packages installed. I raised this query on a
separate thread as well
so apologies for the noise particularly if this is not best practice
on a mailing list.
Thanks as always for your time.
Niall

Okay, if `guix pull --fallback` complains about not understanding
'--fallback', then option 1 won't work.

It would be great to get the output so we know what happened, but I
understand if you don't want to take the time to run the command again.
I doubt you did anything wrong, however.

Removing these directories should do the trick:
$ rm -r /gnu && rm -r /var/guix && rm -r /etc/guix
There is also a symlink owned by each Guix user:
$ rm ~/.config/guix/latest
