I would say so, insofar as a volunteer project can have an "official" non-profit (there is no office to decide officiality). The idea when creating it was to have a European counterpart to handle money transfers within Europe more easily, leaving the US part to the FSF (as mentioned by Andy, tax deductability is a nice incentive and depends on local jurisdiction; for instance in France, only donations to European non-profits can be deduced). In practice, our money still is with the FSF, following a donation campaign some years ago. There is a committee of three people that can decide how this money is spent. Usually Guix Foundation advances expenses (hosting, Guix Days organisation), then sends the receipts to the FSF and gets reimbursed. We could run our own donation campaign, but have not needed it yet (the limiting factor of what we can do right now seems to be rather humanpower than money). Setting up credit card payments has been discussed at our yearly assembly and will probably come soon™. We thought about the (nominal) yearly membership fee, but this could easily be extended to donations. Andreas
