Hi Guix,

I'd like to get staging merged soon, as it wasn't for quite some time.
Here are some stats about the current state of substitutes for staging:

According to guix weather, we have:

| architecture | berlin | hydra |
+--------------+--------+-------+
| x86_64 | 36.5% | 81.7% |
| i686 | 23.8% | 71.0% |
| aarch64 | 22.2% | 00.0% |
| armhf | 17.0% | 45.6% |

What should the next step be?

I think we should wait until the coverage on armhf and aarch64 have
become larger, for the sake of users on those systems.

Also, I've seen some commits that make me wonder if hydra is still being
configured as an authorized substitute server on new Guix installations.
Do you know?

If 'berlin' is the only substitute server by default, then we certainly
need to wait for those numbers to get higher, no?

What do you think?

    Regards,
      Mark

I agree, but I wonder if there is a reason for these to be so low?

Hi Julien,

I've rearranged your reply from "top-posting" style to "bottom-posting"
style. Please consider using bottom-posting in the future.

Julien Lepiller <julien@lepiller.eu> responded:

> I agree, but I wonder if there is a reason for these to be so low?

It's a good question. I have several hypotheses:

* Unfortunately, it is fairly common for builds for important core
packages to spuriously fail, often due to unreliable test suites, and
to cause thousands of other important dependent packages to fail.
When this happens on Hydra, I can see what's going on, and restart the
build and all of its dependents.

I wouldn't be surprised if some important core packages spuriously
failed to build on Berlin, but we have no effective way to see what
happened there. If that's the case, the 'guix weather' numbers above
might never get much higher no matter how long we wait.

* Berlin's build slots may have been occupied for long periods of time
by 'test.*' jobs stuck in an endless "waiting for udevd..." loop, as
  described in <https://bugs.gnu.org/33362>.

Hydra's web interface allows me to monitor active jobs and manually
kill those stuck jobs when I find them. I don't know how to do that
  on Berlin.

* Especially on armhf and aarch64, where Berlin has very little build
capacity, and new builds are being added to Berlin's build queue must
faster than they can be built, it is quite possible that Berlin is
spending most of its effort on long-outdated builds.

On Hydra, I can see when this is happening, and often intervene by
cancelling large numbers of outdated builds on armhf, so that it
remains focused on the most popular and up-to-date packages.

* On WIP branches like 'core-updates' and 'staging', when a new
evaluation is done, I cancel all outdated Hydra jobs on those
branches. I don't know if anything similar is done on Berlin.

In summary, there are several things that I regularly do to make
efficient use of Hydra's limited build capacity. I periodically look at
Berlin's web interface to see how it has progressed, but it is currently
mostly a black box to me. I see no effective way to focus its limited
resources on the most important builds, or to see when build slots are
stuck.

     Regards,
       Mark

This is currently a problem, we can't see
which dependency causes the dependency failure.

We are currently missing an admin interface on berlin, and we would need
that, as canceling a job should be privileged.

Hello Mark,

Mark H Weaver <mhw@netris.org> skribis:

> It's a good question. I have several hypotheses:

These are all valid but there’s a couple more to consider. ;-)

Specifically we’ve had ENOSPC issues on some build nodes lately, and as
I wrote elsewhere, ‘guix offload’ would report them as “permanent
failures”. Thus guix-daemon on berlin would cache those failures and
never retry afterwards. This is fixed by commit
b96e05aefd7a4f734cfec3b27c2d38320d43b687.

Commit 63b0c3eaccdf1816b419632cd7fe721934d2eb27 also arranges so we
don’t choose machines low on disk space.

Another issue I’ve noticed is “database is locked” offloading crashes,
fixed by bdf860c2e99077d431da0cc1db4fc14db2a35d31. We probably don’t
get these on hydra.gnu.org because we’re running a version that predates
the replacement of the ‘guix-register’ program by (guix store database).

There’s a few more issues about offloading in the bug tracker. I
suspect these explain the low availability of substitutes to a large
extent.

I have two patches that I should be done with by the end of today, to
add some more flags to libdrm and mesa for armhf and aarch64. I can hold
on to it for later, or I can go ahead and push it when it's ready. It
shouldn't cause any rebuilds on x86_64 or i686.

I merged master into staging today and got the following chart:

| architecture | berlin | hydra |
+--------------+--------+-------+
| x86_64 | 42.2% | 78.8% |
| i686 | 28.2% | 64.3% |
| aarch64 | 0% | 23.0% |
| armhf | 16.8% | 50.4% |

but compared to master:

| architecture | berlin | hydra |
+--------------+--------+-------+
| x86_64 | 57.5% | 91.9% |
| i686 | 44.4% | 77.8% |
| aarch64 | 0% | 41.8% |
| armhf | 30.3% | 69.6% |

So I think I'd like to see a comparison on hydra of staging vs master
and if it's good enough we go ahead and merge

Something looks wrong here, because Hydra has never supported aarch64,
i.e. it does not create jobs for that system and has never been
connected to an aarch64 build slave, so I don't see how it could
possibly have more than 0% coverage on that system.

I just asked Hydra to produce another evaluation of 'staging'. When it
has finished doing so, we'll know more.

      Thanks!

So what’s the status of this branch now, does anyone know? :-)

Seriously though, we should do something about it.

Presumably this happens while trying to build the inferior that will
then compute the derivations.

I suppose there’s a load path issue or a .go vs .scm mtime issue that
leads hydra-eval-guile-jobs to load the wrong gnu/packages/*.{scm,go}
files, eventually leading to that error.

This is weird because that works well for ‘master’ on hydra.

Hi,

It is time for a release! We were almost there on January… time
flies. ;-)

Many things are pending and I feel we need a small impulsion for a
general motivation. :-)

Well, it seems conditioned by the status of the build farms. Is all
fine in this area?

Schedule a release is the occasion to tackle some not-so-fun tasks as
merging the ’staging’ branch [1], many upgrades as Haskell [2] or Julia,
etc.

Even, it could also be the occasion to complete the purge of Python 2. :-)

Vagrant proposed [3] to fix low-hanging fruit issues in synopsis and
description. It is an occasion for a meetup [4].

For instance, a release date on July could be neat. WDYT?

Please comment bug#53214 [5] or answer to this message for listing the
blocking points; as discussed in this thread [6].

Thanks for the heads-up! I think merging ‘staging’ should be
top-priority. People are welcome to upgrade/reconfigure from it with:

  guix time-machine --branch=staging -- …

Remaining things to check:

  - [ ] system tests
  - [ ] status on non-x86_64 architectures

I agree. To me, it is part of the same effort. From my point of view,
we missed the window for releasing at the previous core-updates merge.
I would like to avoid to miss it. :-)

Somehow, we all have various constraints on our agenda so if we do not
set some deadlines in advance, it is hard to free some slots compared to
the continuous other “urgent” tasks from elsewhere.

My email is a call (July is a proposal) for synchronizing our agenda and
agree on some deadlines and make them happen.

Cheers,
simon

You can run them locally with 'make check-system' (beware: some are
expensive).

Thanks!

I set up a jobset and we’re doing okay compared to ‘master’:

  https://ci.guix.gnu.org/jobset/staging-tests

The main regression is the timescaledb test, because timescaledb fails
its tests on that branch (help welcome!).

Then there’s what looks like a transient failure of the installation
test, which is more worrisome but not a regression I believe:

‘guix weather -s i686-linux’ says 89% (which is underestimated, because
it wrongfully checks for all the packages, including unsupported
packages), which sounds good.

We have to check for AArch64 & co. Any takers?

Overall it seems to me we should be able to merge ‘staging’ within a
couple of days. Thoughts?

Ludo’.

Currently ci.guix.gnu.org isn't building any of the aarch64 packages,
and it looks like it hasn't since about May 26th. Once those start
building again I expect we'll see it's doing well. Minus perhaps the
rust stuff since I'm not sure the offload build machines can handle
that.

There are currently three Overdrive machines processing the AArch64
build backlog:

  https://ci.guix.gnu.org/workers

I propose to let them do more work overnight and merge tomorrow
afternoon CEST. How does that sound?

Thanks,
Ludo’.

I mostly succeeded in updating my rock64 aarch64 machine

guix time-machine --branch=staging -- package -m ~/keep/guixsd/rock64-manifest.scm

but building llvm@11 fails (needed for mesa, I think). The log ends with:

(The build of llvm@11 also needed a few retries because gcc randomly
fails sometimes (once with a segfault). That is not a Guix bug
though, I think, but peculiarities of the rock64.)

Florian

I know I've built llvm@11 and mesa on aarch64 hardware for staging.
Also, you're missing the actual error message there, We only have
Error 2. I was able to build my pine64's OS config on staging although I
haven't tried deploying it.

Oh I see I'm missing the last merge; I'm still at commit b422687cbd.

I will try again with staging at 091eb323ba27. But it will take a
long time; feel free to proceed regardless.

llvm@11 was built successfully. Sorry for the noise.

I'm currently running on staging with no bugs to report (x86_64-linux)!

Should we also make use of the point release to remove some deprecated
things/switch some defaults? I'm thinking of:
* removing the swap-devices deprecation warning and compatibility code;
* removing the bootloader-configuration-target warning and compatibility
code;
* switching gdm-configuration-wayland? to #t, so that the OOB experience
with Wayland sessions is better.

All of those have roughly been in Guix for ~6 months, so it would seem
fair to me to move on. There may be many other deprecations that we
could remove, but those are the ones I'm aware of, feel free to add your
own :)

I have patches for the 3 above, if we agree to move on with this (with a
NEWS entry for the third).

WDYT?

I wonder if that info is accurate.

For instance, https://ci.guix.gnu.org/build/716980/details shows the
derivation for /gnu/store/2smylcjq5cppxcrj2mn229hlmh6bf7w4-libxft-2.3.3.
It is queued, just not being processed (yet).

It went from 17.1% to 17.3% in two days, even though the AArch64
machines have been busy all along it seems. Maybe they’ve been
processing the backlog that had accumulated on ‘master’ rather than the
things we care about.

Anyway, I think we must address that, but I also think we can’t afford
to delay the merge any longer or the updates will be stale.

Thus I propose to merge today, for real this time.

Objections?

Thanks,
Ludo’.

Per https://issues.guix.gnu.org/55848, it looks like
grunewald/kreuzberg/pankow are busy processing jobs, but each time
failing after 15 minutes with the same network-level error.

SGTM!

Sorry for the delay. I've built some packages from the staging branch on
powerpc64le-linux (including Emacs, which brings in a lot of stuff) and
it seems good.

Soooo… turns out commit e31ab8c24848a7691a838af8df61d3e7097cddbc on
‘master’ unwillingly triggered a rebuild of 2K packages.

It’s too late to revert (they’ve been built anyway), but I’ve merged
‘master’ in ‘staging’ so they can be built there.

Which means I’ll merge ‘staging’ in ‘master’ tomorrow morning if nothing
has collapsed by then. :-)

I think we do release and then core-updates, before we get bogged down

I don’t think we can do that because there hasn’t been any new release
in the meantime, unfortunately. Better wait for a few months after 1.4.

Perhaps I’m biased because I use Xorg, but I wonder how good a default
that is? To put it differently, what fraction of the user base uses
Wayland?

I'm not sure, it does seem like a fraction of people use it on IRC but
then again it's more likely that Wayland users would talk about it, X
being the default. If there are no outstanding bugs with Wayland Gnome
though, I think it'd be a better choice: no tearing in the default
configuration, and better designed. GUI Toolkits seem to have adapted
pretty well, and we still have XWayland for the rest. The most glaring
non-Wayland app would be Emacs, but emacs-next-pgtk is fully
Wayland-native.

For me the #1 reason though is onboarding experience: take a user of
another distro that uses their favorite Wayland compositor, and wants to
try out Guix. They install it through the Guix installer, and don't
understand (yet) how to read the whole documentation and write their own
config file fully. They add sway to their system packages, reconfigure,
but next reboot GDM doesn't show Sway in the available sessions; they then
decide it's not worth their time and go back to their old distro. This
default change would make sure that it Just Works Out of The Box™ on
first install.

For the other deprecation changes, I agree, let's just wait a bit longer.

Best,

So plain ‘emacs’ package doesn’t work on Wayland? That sounds like a
recipe for a poor user experience, no?

(FWIW folks like me who use exwm, ratpoison, or one of these geeky
tiling window managers probably can’t switch.)

Yeah, understood. (I think we should have a section in the manual
documenting, with actual examples, how to set up Wayland!)

Surely there’s a geek audience who expects Wayland, and another geek
audience who needs X for their tools; in between, there’s probably a lot
of people who’s fine either way.

I have no objection to defaulting to Wayland, but my gut feeling is that
we have enough on our plate for 1.4 already, so I’d rather delay that
post-release.

WDYT?

The mainline Emacs is not Wayland-native, but it (along with just
about everything else) will run fine under XWayland. It's how I've
been running it for some time now. The user experience is almost
indistinguishable from either the ‘pgtk’ branch or the mainline,
X-only branch.

This is correct, but I don't see why this should prevent Guix
offering the option for Wayland-based compositors/window-managers
out of the box as all it does is offer more options for users.

Unless I'm misunderstanding something, I don't believe that
setting the ‘wayland’ flag to #t in gdm-configuration causes
Wayland to be used for your desktop environment, it merely
*allows* it to be selected from the greeter. When logging in you
can select from Gnome under X, Gnome under Wayland, or other
window managers you may have installed under either
environment. Without that flag only the X11 window managers will
be selectable.

It does, but only through XWayland which is not ideal, and doesn't look
as good as Emacs on native X or emacs-pgtk on Wayland (font rendering in
XWayland isn't as good as either of those).

Maybe someone would love to write ewwm? :p

What I was advocating was only to change GDM's default mode to Wayland,
not force everyone to use a Wayland compositor! The reason is that GDM
running in X mode will not pick up Wayland sessions, whereas GDM running
in Wayland mode will happily list and launch both types. Also, note
that X software can run on Wayland through XWayland, which is part of
the official xorg project and works quite well, minus some small
wrinkles such as the one noted above.

Seems ok to me, since in any case most people trying out Guix in a VM
will `guix pull` before `guix reconfigure`'ing, as long as we do that at
some point it will work OOTB for them. We can postpone all of this for

Yes, and NB: Xwayland does not shut out native wayland.

It may even share more nicely than that, depending on system.
On my old Puri.sm Librem13v4 PureOS/amber-variant-of-debian system...
-----------cut here---------------start------------->8---
# $ uname -rv
4.19.0-19-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 4.19.232-1 (2022-03-07)
-----------cut here---------------end--------------->8---
...I can switch back and forth between Xwayland that does
all the stuff that needs X or Xorg (gnome and browsers, and Audacity
and all that) and my hacky experiments with bypassing X and
talking to the compositor in C.

The compositor happily places my pixel buffers on the screen together with
firefox or texworks or whatever else is running, so there is not necessarily
a Wayland "vs" Xorg conflict. YMMV I would guess, but works for me :)

This seems to me like it demonstrates an opportunity to encourage developers
to get their feet wet with X-server-indepedent apps. (That doesn't mean
giving up all the graphics and font software that paints pixels into buffers --
it "just" factors out the buffer compositing)

My system also permits switching to a framebuffer ( /dev/fb0 ) tty3 based
environemt, while leaving the gnome gui stuff running.
Ctl-Alt-F3 gets me a console login prompt. Ctl-Alt-F2 switches me back,
whether I logged out of the console shell or not.

If you are a member of the video group, you can read and write the
frame buffer as a 1920x1080x4 byte mmap whose address you can get
with an ioctl. Other geometries are of course possble.

I wrote some C to poke character cells from the kernel sun12x22 font.
Long time ago. I have been meaning to port my pixelpoking to wayland,
and have wip stuff, which I will share at some point :)

The reason I was in frame buffer mode today was the gnome side got
total locked, so I thought I could Ctl-Alt-F3 and kill off stuck bits.
Which I did -- killed the whole GUI side, in the end. An alernative
to rescue/maintenace mode, before going there, IOW.

But since I was there in console fb mode, I wanted to check that
my old font demo worked. It did :)

BUT: Fn Prt Sc had no hook like in gnome, so I wanted to save the
display. Guess what you can do?

To make a screenshot:
    xz -kzc /dev/fb0 > some_xzss_name.xz
To display such a screen-shot:
    xz -dc some_xzss_name.xz > /dev/fb0

This works fast, and the compression is better than the .png files from
gnome's screenshots. Of course this doess not coordinate with anything else
that may be painting the screen, so it will get mixed with updates in sometimes
curious ways, since the compositor avoids update screen areas it thinks haven't
changed. If you poke pixels there, they'll stay until the compositor gets someting
new for that area,

I'll try to attach one I made. It shows all the kernel sun12x22.c characters
with bounding boxes in red and hex index numbers at the array edges.

Maybe this dual fb0 and Xwayland capabilty could help someone?
You get it all "for free" with some systems, and it doesn't demand anything.

There is tricky stuff going on though. So no warranties
from me on any of this info :)

I don't know how much work, but I would guess they can be made
to work alongside wayland, if not using wayland to best advanage.

Best would be to wean emacs of X, IWT.

Otherwise they can probably play nicely on the same back end,
not sharing screen space maybe, but flipping between with some key hit.

A quick check on if you have drm-driven displays:

-----------cut here---------------start------------->8---
# $ head /sys/class/drm/*/status
==> /sys/class/drm/card0-DP-1/status <==
disconnected

==> /sys/class/drm/card0-eDP-1/status <==
connected

==> /sys/class/drm/card0-HDMI-A-1/status <==
disconnected
-----------cut here---------------end--------------->8---

BTW, if you want to hack native wayland, I recommend [0]
to start with. The examples mostly worked for me.

but so much is developing so fast that things
like using anonymous files and mmap-ing them to pass
to wayland as private buffers may show up only
while your're looking for something else on stackoverflow
or wikipedia or reddit or ... you may miss it.

[0] https://wayland-book.com/introduction.html

Sorry to interpose so much, the context for "this" (I think) was:

--8<---------------cut here---------------start------------->8---
> > (FWIW folks like me who use exwm, ratpoison, or one of these geeky
> > tiling window managers probably can’t switch.)
--8<---------------cut here---------------end--------------->8---

Well, I think some may be able to switch, or coexist. But I've been wrong before :)

I'm on a foreign distro, but FWIW I've been using plain Emacs 27 with the KDE Plasma Wayland session on HiDPI displays for over a year, and I have no complaints. In fact, I didn't even realize Emacs wasn't Wayland-native until this thread. I took a look just now at the 'emacs-next-pgtk' package in Guix: it does look a bit nicer in a side-by-side comparison, but it's subtle. Either way, mostly Emacs just looks like Emacs. So I don't think Emacs should be a blocker for enabling Wayland by default.

Sure.

OK, I wasn’t aware of that; if setting ‘wayland?’ to #t is this smooth
and basically indistinguishable for those who want to stick with X, then
I guess we should enable it.

I’m still unsure whether doing is before the release is reasonable,
given how much we have on our plate.

Thanks,
Ludo’.

I think the only real question is what shows up first by default in a
fresh install. I believe by default SDDM will show the window manager
that was last used by default.

My current OS config, when I spin it up in a VM, lists
enlightenment/wayland before enlightenment/X11. I didn't test with
gnome.

Hi,

sorry to hijack the thread – I found your post when debugging random
segfaults on the rock64, and just wanted to post a possible solution for
anyone having the same problem.

"pelzflorian (Florian Pelz)" <pelzflorian@pelzflorian.de> [2022-06-09 19:19:30+0200]:
> (The build of llvm@11 also needed a few retries because gcc randomly
> fails sometimes (once with a segfault). That is not a Guix bug

This seems to be a hardware issue that can be fixed by downclocking the
memory¹. Mainline u-boot has two variants of the rk3328-sdram-lpddr3
.dtsi file, so I just did

    (define u-boot-rock64-rk3328/666
      (package
        (inherit u-boot-rock64-rk3328)
        (arguments
         (substitute-keyword-arguments (package-arguments u-boot-rock64-rk3328)
           ((#:phases phases)
            `(modify-phases ,phases
               (add-after 'unpack 'change-ddr-clock
                 (lambda _
                   (substitute* "arch/arm/dts/rk3328-rock64-u-boot.dtsi"
                     (("rk3328-sdram-lpddr3-1600.dtsi") "rk3328-sdram-lpddr3-666.dtsi"))))))))))

and used that for the bootloader:

    (bootloader
      (bootloader-configuration
        (bootloader
          (bootloader
            (inherit u-boot-rock64-rk3328-bootloader)
            (package u-boot-rock64-rk3328/666)))
        …

With this I was able to compile both gcc and llvm several times; before,
compilation would reliably crash within an hour unless it was done using
a single core. I assume performance with the lower memory rate is
considerably worse, but I haven’t done any measurements.

It’s very nice that I can include this in my OS configuration and then
pretty much forget about it. Big thanks to all guix for a system where
making such changes is so simple!

Regards,
Timotej
