It=E2=80=99s used primarily for newer versions packages in the same= =20 release channel -- ex. the default Python in Guix is python@3.10,=20 but there=E2=80=99s python-next@3.12. At some point, python will get=20 promoted to 3.12.x -- the "next" name is a reflection of this;=20 it=E2=80=99s intended to be the next python package in Guix. Upstream has= =20 a single release channel, with a sliding support window over those=20 releases. The nss/nspr situation is somewhat different, as there are two=20 upstream channels ("rapid release" and "extended support=20 release"). ESRs are a subset of rapid releases, and the majority=20 of rapid releases never enter the ESR channel. Naming a rapid=20 release nss-next when it will almost never become promoted to the=20 nss package feels wrong to me. >> While I=E2=80=99d prefer having the packages named "nss-esr" and "nss",= =20 >> I >> think the ESR should get the more prominent "nss" name, which=20 >> should >> make it easy for developers to do the right thing -- if a bunch=20 >> of >> packages depend on nss-latest, we=E2=80=99re back to the initial=20 >> problem. >> Code comments documenting this would also be added. >> >> We might also want to adopt this approach for nspr. >> >> I=E2=80=99m not sure about nss-certs; I think that should probably=20 >> track the >> nss ESR, and I don=E2=80=99t think there=E2=80=99s a compelling need for= a=20 >> package >> tracking the rapid release channel. I opened 71832 which implements the first part of my nss proposal=20 and updates Librewolf, so if you have strong feelings about -next=20 vs. -latest, that might be the best place to raise them.
