I was in the same boat as you until trying out spacemacs ~two years ago: https://github.com/syl20bnr/spacemacs Now I have the full power of emacs, without carpal-tunnel inducing keybindings, and with a really sane and flexible configuration system. They do an amazing job at creating mnemonic key bindings for emacs modules, e.g. to make a (ma)git commit the combo is -g-c. Give it a go, if you haven't already :)
