Hello Guix!

Release progress: week 4.

  • ‘make assert-binaries-available’ reports 92.7% coverage (details
    below). We’re not making much progress.

  • Architectures:

     - i586-gnu: Chris and I fixed core packages (test failures;
       bordeaux.guix is building them and I’ll enable it on ci.guix real
       soon now.

     - armhf-linux: No progress so far. Chris rightfully points out
       that bordeaux.guix has 100% coverage for these core substitutes.
       Can we arrange so that ci.guix at least builds these core subset
       of packages?

     - aarch64-linux: Rust is now available. Other than that, similar
       situation: a few substitutes for these core packages are still
       missing on ci.guix (they are on bordeaux.guix) for unclear
       infrastructure reasons.

     - powerpc64le-linux: Only Emacs and Vim are reported as missing on
       ci.guix by ‘make assert-binaries-available’.

  • Installer:

     - Core dumps can now be sent upon crashes:
       <https://issues.guix.gnu.org/58733>.

     - ‘read-partition-uuid’ is called until it succeeds, fixing
       <https://issues.guix.gnu.org/53541>.

     - Guile-Parted crash is being investigated:
       <https://issues.guix.gnu.org/58732>.

     - I’m working on a patch similar to
       <https://issues.guix.gnu.org/58549> to report about unsupported
       devices.

  • Release issue <https://issues.guix.gnu.org/53214> blocked by 6 open
    bugs, down from 9. Some issues that are still opened are no longer
    considered blocking.

  • Others:

     - Shepherd memory leak still being investigated, with ramifications
       in Fibers and probably in Guile proper:
       <https://issues.guix.gnu.org/58631>.

     - Vagrant updated the ‘guix’ package in Debian:
       <https://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/guix-devel/2022-10/msg00295.html>

I was blissfully optimistic: to do that, we first need to run
‘cuirass-remote-worker’ in the childhurds (which are cross-compiled).

Alas Cuirass depends on Fibers, which is currently Linux-only¹, so we
cannot {cross-,}build it for GNU/Hurd. The good news is that
‘remote-worker.scm’ itself doesn’t seem to use Fibers. So I wonder if
we could arrange to build a stripped-down package that contains nothing
but ‘cuirass-remote-worker’.  WDYT?

Cuirass also depends on Avahi, which is currently not buildable for
GNU/Hurd due to libcap requiring on Linux-specific headers, and it seems
to be a hard requirement². Unfortunately ‘remote-worker.scm’ requires
it.

Thoughts?

Ludo’.

¹ There’s preliminary work to address that:
  <https://github.com/wingo/fibers/pull/53>

² AFAICS Debian doesn’t have it on GNU/Hurd either:
  <https://packages.debian.org/bullseye/libcap2>

Yes, Fiber is not used much anymore, except for the web server.

The remote worker is able to discover the remote server using Avahi but
can also connect directly to the server using its IP address. We could
definitely make the Avahi dependency optional.

Thanks,

Mathieu

Not used much, you mean for remote-worker?

Alright.

We’ll see that after the release!
