The GNU Guix¹ project is organizing a hackathon on September 27th and
28th, 2014. The hackathon will take place primarily on-line, on the
#guix channel on Freenode. We have started collecting a list of hacking
ideas². Feel free to stop by on guix-devel@gnu.org and make more
suggestions!

The hackathon is accessible to anyone with experience in GNU/Linux
packaging or systems hacking. Scheme programmers will find additional
things to work on in the tool set. We will also be welcoming newcomers
and helping them get started.

We would love to have the valuable feedback of GNU maintainers and
hackers, and patches to add their GNU package, for those still missing.

Ludo’.

Cool, we'd be happy to promote this in http://fsf.org/events if you can
email the necessary information (look at any individual event listing
there for an example) to info@fsf.org saying that I suggested it.

The hackathon is tomorrow! Make sure to look at
<http://libreplanet.org/wiki/Group:Guix/Hackathon-09-2014>, edit it,
etc. I plan to be on #guix around 8AM UTC (10AM CEST), see you there!

Hi Ludo,

If we are not to many, maybe we could monitor your hacking through a
shared Google hangout screen? It would be quite helpful to me to see
what you are doing. I have too many things I wish to achieve, but if I
could get comfortable with the development environment I would
consider that a great win.

I am not quite sure what google hangout is, but it sounds a lot like a
proprietary software as a service. So I do not think that would be in line
with the gnu philosophy...

If there is an alternative I am all ears.

You got it right. Other options are available for screen sharing that
are free software. There are also lots of audio things for VoIP.
Mumble [0] is one such thing. It's free, works very well, and uses the
unencumbered Opus audio codec - the successor to Vorbis. :)

Thanks for everyone who participated in the hackathon this week-end!

It’s been pleasant and motivating to see newcomers on #guix, and to see
all the hacks: KDE and Hurd stuff, Ruby support, assorted package bug
fixes, the PyPi importer, linters, Emacs UI improvements, etc.

Some of the things worked on during the week-end haven’t landed yet, but
here are the details:
