Hi all,
The first FOSSY (Free and Open Source Yearly) conference is coming up in
two weeks! It’s being hosted in Portland, OR by the Software Freedom
Conservancy.
I was looking over the schedule and I spotted a few familiar names from
the Guix community. Why don’t we plan a little Guix meetup? It could
be as simple as a Guix luncheon or we could try to find time for some
sort of hackathon (though it’s getting to be short notice for that...).
Let’s take this opportunity to bring some Guixers together in North
America for a change!
Who’s in?

Sounds great!
Will present a talk Sunday in which I will definitely be mentioning the
Guix bootstrapping work!

Well, I was waiting to hear from more folks, but maybe not that many of
us are going to FOSSY. Either way, I still think we should plan
something.
What about having a Guix lunch on Friday? I don’t really have strong
feelings, but I thought I’d propose something concrete to get things
going. I’ve never been to Portland, so I don’t have thoughts about
where to meet. Do you know the city at all?

I have a couple decades of experience in Portland... :)
There are not a lot of things near the venue, but I will look for
options that are nearby and/or quick to get to by public transit ... and
ideally with outdoor seating or takeaway options.

That’s what I thought, but I couldn’t remember for sure. :)

That sounds fantastic! Thank you.

My current best idea is the handful of food carts at pioneer courthouse
square, with a few different carts that cater to various dietary needs
and appetites... about 10-15 minutes on the MAX, with stops right at
both endpoints!
Presuming nobody wants to miss any talks, looks like Friday lunch is
from 12:30 to 2pm... so that should leave roughly a short hour to hang
out and chat and whatnot, more if we coordinate transit times. :)

This sounds great, but I just remembered that FOSSY provides lunch!
Maybe we should roll with that – it would make the timing a little
easier. Also, I guess Friday lunch is a breakfast buffet, which sounds
pretty nice. If that doesn’t work for you for whatever reason, I’m
happy to hit up some food trucks with a local. :) Otherwise, it’s
probably simpler just to set up a “Guix table” at the regular lunch.
As an aside, I don’t know how the lunches are going to work with the
health and safety measures or whether we could sit outside or whether a
buffet runs against a lot of the other precautions they’re taking....
For my part, I’m happy to take my queues from the organizers and I
respect that they have policies in place. I don’t have a lot
expectations beyond that.
