Subject: Enabling 'large_dir' on ext4 holding store
Date: Wed, 14 Aug 2024 17:31:14 -0700	[thread overview]
Message-ID: <874j7mbp9p.fsf@lease-up.com> (raw)

Hi,

While looking for something else, I came across a Mastodon post by
Ludovic about large store folders running out of space on ext4. [1]

In the thread from July, Ludovic asked about setting 'large_dir' by
default on ext4. [2] Efraim wondered about it too, but likewise received
no reply. [3]

It is not a no-brainer because for some time GRUB2 could not boot from
such filesystems. [4] GRUB 2.12 seems to supports 'large_dir' [5] and
landed in Guix [6] a few weeks before the Mastodon thread, although I
haven't tried using the option myself.

Is 'large_dir' the default for ext4 in the installer now, or should it
be?

Should the manual mention the option for those who partition their own
drives?

Finally, should I enable 'large_dir' for the stores on my own equipment?
Thanks!

Kind regards
Felix
