Usually, the transformation reads: guix build foobar --with-source=3Dfoobar=3D/path/to/foobar/v9.5.0 or guix build barbaz --with-inputs=3Dfoobar=3Dfoobar@9.5.0 The transformation =E2=80=99with-source=E2=80=99 overwrites the origin of t= he target package. Target package means the one specified after =E2=80=99--with-sour= ce=3D=E2=80=99. If you have 2 packages =E2=80=99foobar=E2=80=99, one at version 9.0.1 and o= ne at 9.5.0, and you want to overwrite the source of 9.5.0, from my understanding, you should write: guix build foobar@9.5.0 --with-source=3Dfoobar@9.5.0=3D/path/to/foobar/v9.= 5.0-modif Does it not work? The transformation =E2=80=99with-inputs=E2=80=99 overwrites the inputs. Th= e package =E2=80=99barbaz=E2=80=99 depends on the package =E2=80=99foobar=E2=80=99 at= one specific version; in the input lists, there is ("foobar" ,foobar-9.0.1) and here ,foobar-9.0.1 refers to a symbol defining a package at a specific version. This symbol is probably just =E2=80=99foobar=E2=80=99, but if all is named fooba= r, the explanations are made harder. ;-) If you have another version of foobar, you have probably another symbol, say foobar-9.5.0. Then =E2=80=99with-inputs=3Dfoobar=3Dfoobar@9.5.0=E2=80= =99 replaces the symbol listed as inputs of =E2=80=99barbaz=E2=80=99 by the symbol referring= to =E2=80=9Cfoobar@9.5.0=E2=80=9C. In the example, somehow, the symbol =E2=80= =99foobar-9.0.1=E2=80=99 will be replaced by the symbol =E2=80=99foobar-9.5.1=E2=80=99. Now, be careful with ("identifier" ,symbol). I do not remember if =E2=80=99with-inputs=E2=80=99 uses =E2=80=98identifier=E2=80=99 or the =E2= =80=9Cname=E2=80=9D that =E2=80=99symbol=E2=80=99 defines. I guess it is =E2=80=9Cname=E2=80=9D. I agree that it can appear confusing; = a change in core-updates should remove this confusing =E2=80=99identifier=E2=80=99, I g= uess. :-) > Any ideas if I can create a new package with --with-source and then > substitute it in the same command for an input of another package?=20 Is this command-line not working guix build barbaz --with-source=3Dfoobar=3D/path/to/replaced/foobar ? Assuming the package =E2=80=99barbaz=E2=80=99 depends on the package =E2= =80=9Cfoobar=E2=80=9D. Otherwise, maybe you can provide an concrete example defining the package =E2=80=99barbazz=E2=80=99 and =E2=80=99foobar=E2=80=99. :-) Cheers, simon
