Hello Guixers!

We are looking forward to see you all during the Guix Day event on
Sunday November 22! As a reminder, here is the schedule again.

   <https://guix.gnu.org/en/blog/2020/online-guix-day-announce-2/>

If you haven't watched the talks yet, you should do so before the
conference, as we are only having extended Q&A for each talk.

The online Guix Day conference is hosted at:

   <https://guixbbb.fosshost.org/b/zim-dmr-hp2-ibu>

You do not need to register, you only need to follow the link. Then as
soon as the moderators accept your request, you will be in. Of course,
everyone can (and should) join! Share this link with your friends!

Two channels to ask questions:

 1. The good ol’ #guix on irc.freenode.net. A client is provided at:

   <https://guix.gnu.org/en/contact/irc/>

 2. The BigBlueButton chat.

   <https://guixbbb.fosshost.org/b/zim-dmr-hp2-ibu>

If the question or what you want to share is too complex to explain by
chat, please ask to take the floor––you need to have a microphone with
the correct setup though. Also, you should keep your mic muted if you
do not wish to speak. Please follow these simple rules so we can have a
fruitful discussion and learn from each other. The sessions will not
be recorded.

If you already use Guix, you can run:

  guix environment --ad-hoc icecat \
       -- icecat https://guixbbb.fosshost.org/b/zim-dmr-hp2-ibu

Any browser with decent webrtc support (icecat, ungoogled-chromium,
...) can also be used to open BBB.

See you all very soon!

** Code of Conduct **

This online conference is an official Guix event. Therefore, the Code
of Conduct applies in all the channels of communication.

If you witness violations of the code of conduct during the event,
please email guix-days@gnu.org, a private email alias that reaches the

That was a great Guix day! Thanks for organizing. I think we had
over 80 visitors, maxing around 60 at a time. I think we should do this
2-3 times a year.

How about creating a simple survey with questions on your first days
living with GNU Guix:

1. What was your primary motivation for starting with guix before you
started contributing (select one)

2. What was your second motivation for starting with guix (select one)

3. What are your other motivations now you know guix (tick any checkbox)

4. What other distros have you used for longer than a year each (tick any box)

5. What was your software development interest (free text)

6. Other remarks (free text)

The idea is to get an understanding why people come to Guix and what
motivates them to contribute (work). It may not be representative of
what is to come, but it kinda makes sense to me on what we should
focus on to find more contributors.

My anwers would be:

1. (Sane) deployment
2. Scheme
3. Reproducibility, environment(s), programming, community, GNU...
4. Yggdrasil, Slackware, Red Hat, Rock, Debian, Nix
5. Mixed bag of programming languages and dependencies, and running
   complex web services
6. Don't plan to use anything else if I can avoid it :)

Pj.

A day after I'm pretty happy that I joined the Guix Days yesterday :) It
was very pleasant experience. So thanks to Julien, Simon, Fosshost and
all the presenters!

The good things:
* having the presentations online a week before is nice
* over 60 folk from all over the world talking about Guix, thats even
more then at GuixDays@FOSDEM. I'm impressed!
* I had almost no technical issues (apologies for them who had)...
* meetups like this (or the FOSDEM) always give me a motivation kick to
work on Guix things :)

What I have in mind for a next time:
* create smaller subrooms (in BigBlueButton) for certain topics like at
the FOSDEM Guix Days -> with a begin, (in-between) and end all together

Let us enjoy the release
Jonathan

P.S: Are we allowed to use this BigBlueButton instance of Fosshost or is
this a one-shot service?

Hi Jonathan,

Thank you for your feedback. You beat me, I have just send an email
asking such. ;-)

We were discussing the ability to do such thing; but not implemented
it. So definitively! :-)

I speak for myself. From my understanding, the instance
guixbbb.fosshost.org could be reused. I have ideas, you what do you
have in mind?

Cheers,
simon

PS: The ugly missing thing with online is «drink and party»
(socializing). :-) Well, one idea that popped up had been: people from
the same city could join, when possible. But lockdown complicated
everything, at least in Paris.

I really missed this too :) The long dinners with a big group and then
roaming the lively streets of Brussels ... I've tried to reproduce it
online and but it's not so easy.
