If you are on debian, have you tried
dpkg -l '*your*globbed*name*here*'
or
dpkg -l '*'|egrep your-regex-here
or the former, preserving header and excluding non-installed, e.g.,?
dpkg -l '*your*globbed*name*here*'|grep -v ^un
