Hi Guix,

FOSDEM also offers stands where you can present your project and get
directly in contact with interested people. What do you think? Should
we get one?

Details can be found here:

https://fosdem.org/2019/news/2018-08-10-call-for-participation/

* Application deadline: 2018-11-02, so there is a bit more time left.
* There are no costs.
* We get a 180x80cm table, two chairs.
* Power socket available.
* WiFi as usual available.
* We commit us to have at least 2 people at the stand during whole
FOSDEM.

I personally like to walk to the stands and get directly in touch with
the people you heard in a talk (or you missed). Do we want this? Do we
find enough people-power to do it?

I would suggest at least three timeslots for each day, so we would have
12 slots in total. Who will spend his time at the stand? Of cause, I'm
volunteering for a slot or two and can organize things.

Ideas to present:

* A poster of a easy and a complex dependency graph.
* A poster of a nice system declaration.
* Notebook with GuixSD installed, many generations. Show how you can
install/remove packages, switch generations, etc. People can try out
things on their own.
* Can we show some ARM hardware or fancy boards with Guix running on
them?
* Replicant phone with Guix running?
* Stickers
* We should have T-Shirts for us.

The stands are usually very demanded. We have better chances if we
share the table with some other project. Should we do that? And if,
with which project?

* Can we get some reproducible-builds/bootstrappable corporation?
Debian?
* Nix?
* Guile?

Here is the list from the last two years:

https://archive.fosdem.org/2017/stands/

Help people get Guix installed would be a good one too.

Wider GNU could be one?

Hi guix and Björn!

I'm happy to contribute to the stall, but...

I will have to figure out how I get there and accomodation (I guess I'm
financially "poor"). But if I can get that sorted you can count on me.
In that regard, if anyone's traveling by car or similar from approximately
Norway I'd love to hitch a ride.

	:)

I run guixsd as my only computer, though I wouldn't want it as a demo
machine, but I'm happy to show it off. I have some stickers [1]; I might
get more of the same, but slightly bigger. I'll bring what I have - if I can.

I will probably attend FOSDEM again, and if I do, then I would
like to spend a slot at the stall.

We should be able to sponsor stickers through Guix Europe.

Yay! Chris Baines brought those really nice stickers at last year’s
GHM, but those that Tonton posted look nice too. :-)

There is one more month left until application deadline (November 2),
so I want to bring this back to your attention:

First of all, thanks to those who are willing to take a shift. Here's
the current list:

* Alex Sassmannshausen
* Tonton
* Andreas Enge
* Ludovic
* Gabor Boskovits
* Leo Famulari
* Tobias G-R
* me

Have I missed someone? Do we find more volunteers?

Also, the question weather or not we should go with a partner was not
addressed. Only Pjotr noted that GNU would be another one. I'm not sure
if GNU as such is participating, I only saw the FSFE-stand.

How should we go on with this? There are only about 2 weeks left.

Björn

I suppose the likelihood of getting a booth increases if it’s shared by
two projects, right?

GNU as such never had a booth AFAIK, and I’m not sure which parts of GNU
we could share it with. Sharing with the FSFE would be nice, if that’s
something they’re willing to do.

We could also ask the Reproducible Builds people if they’d like to share
a booth with us. Would you like me to email them?

> How should we go on with this? There are only about 2 weeks left.

What else do we need for the proposal to be in good shape?

Thanks for taking care of this!

Ludo’.

I'm not certain I can attend, but will be available if so.

I asked on the r-b mailing list. They are unsure and want to discuss it
in their next meeting:

I'm not sure we want to commit to operating a booth a FOSDEM and I would
suggest we'll discuss this on our next IRC meeting next Tuesday, the
23rd of October at 16 UTC on #reproducible-builds.

I saved the date and think I can participate.

Cool, let’s see what comes out of it!

Hi Guix,

we have only one day left (somehow, I thought it would be until 4th
November, but it is Nov 2nd!). So, I would like to get this out tonight
or at latest tomorrow morning (UTC+1).

The people from Reproducible Builds have too few people, so we are left
alone. I still would give it a try and we have quite some people who
have volunteered for the stand. So, let's just give it a try, we can't
loose anything.

Here is my proposal, I have some open questions regarding official
logo and contacs and naming, and if you like to add/update the
description, feel free.

Björn

Project details

;; Is the right way "GNU Guix" or just "Guix"? Or even "GuixSD" or "GNU
;;; Guix and GNU GuixSD"?

Name of project: GNU Guix

Description of project(s) for publication:

;; This is mostly copied from the manual's introduction part:

GNU Guix is a package management tool for the GNU system. Guix makes it
easy for unprivileged users to install, upgrade, or remove packages, to
roll back to a previous package set, to build packages from source, and
generally assists with the creation and maintenance of software
environments.

You can install GNU Guix on top of an existing GNU/Linux system where
it complements the available tools without interference, or you can use
it as part of the standalone Guix System Distribution or GuixSD. With
GNU GuixSD, you declare all aspects of the operating system
configuration and Guix takes care of instantiating the configuration in
a transactional, reproducible, and stateless fashion.

GuixSD is developed under the GNU Free System Distribution Guidelines
(FSDG).

Why does it fit FOSDEM?

;; Anything more to say?
;; This is not to publish but just for the FOSDEM-people.

GNU GuixSD is a FSDG-complient GNU/Linux-Distribution. GNU Guix and GNU
GuixSD is and was present at FOSDEM with several talks over the last
years and has its fringe event in the FOSDEM-time.

Right, I think it’s worth trying.

“GNU Guix” is fine.

Perhaps add something like: “As such, it solves problems that are often
address using ‘containers’, but does so in a way that provides
transparency and provenance tracking that are often lacking in container
solutions.”

Maybe drop this last sentence…

For the first sentence: “GNU GuixSD is a transactional GNU/Linux
distribution with support for declarative configuration management.”

OK!

Rather <https://git.savannah.gnu.org/cgit/guix.git/>.

I think that’s enough.

Thank you!
