     What is that that’s been hard-coded?  Normally, Automake-generated
     makefiles honor the user’s CPPFLAGS environment/makefile variable.
     
Sure.  I can pass additional flags with CPPFLAGS.  But I cannot turn off
ones which Makefile.am puts there.
