[-- Attachment #1.1: Type: text/plain, Size: 4066 bytes --]

I'm using the Guix system. After upgrading it to recent versions of Guix (e.g. guix 1110479), I can't access the GNOME desktop. The problem is also present when creating a virtual machine with the same configuration file used for the real machine (guix system vm config.scm).

STEPS TO REPRODUCE

I guess these:

1. guix pull --commit=1110479d2d4dc69fc66eadb4a6c24ca2f13afa93
2. guix package -m MANIFEST.scm
3. sudo guix system reconfigure CONFIG.scm
4. sudo reboot
5. Log in in GDM

(MANIFEST and CONFIG available on request if necessary)

EXPECTED RESULT

After a few seconds, the GNOME desktop shows up, and you can start working normally.

UNEXPECTED RESULT

In the real machine, only a black screen appears. After hours, there is no change. There is no mouse pointer or any indication that the desktop has loaded.

In the virtual machine, you see a black screen and the mouse pointer appearing sometimes and then disappearing. After a minute, you are taken back to the log in screen, which now behaves erratically: when you click on your user to log in again, it shows the username input box, and, once you move the pointer to enter your username, the view is changed back to the list of users. The same happens everytime you try to log in again.

WORKAROUND

Personally, I choose one of these options:

1. Use Sway as an emergency desktop (which is always in my system config file).
2. Roll back to a generation of the system that works (e.g. guix ab98b51e). This usually requires to roll back to a previous generation of the user profile as well to avoid other errors when logging in to GNOME.

This is a config that uses Xorg, not Wayland, right?

What does ‘sudo herd status’ show at that point?

I wonder if it might be <https://issues.guix.gnu.org/55488>.

If not, could you provide a minimal config that reproduces the problem?

Thanks,
Ludo’.

Looks as if everything was started.

Could you share bits of /var/log/messages starting from the line that
reads “syslogd (GNU inetutils 2.0): restart” (the last boot)? This
could contain sensitive information so you can redact it or share it
privately if you prefer.

Oops, I meant <https://issues.guix.gnu.org/55444>, which is now fixed.

>> If not, could you provide a minimal config that reproduces the problem?
>

It works fine in ‘guix system vm’. :-/
(Same for you?)

So it could be a stateful issue, such as stale files in /var/lib/gdm.
One way to test that hypothesis would be, for instance, to run:

  sudo mv /var/lib/gdm/.cache{,.bak}
  sudo herd restart xorg-server

Thanks,
Ludo’.

Hi Ludo,

Since its been a while, lots of commits have gone into master and https://issues.guix.gnu.org/55444 is solved, I decided to reconfigure the system, and try again. Unfortunately, I still can't start a GNOME session. I update the system information below and provide the data you asked for in the last message.

My current system generation that presents the same issue is this one:

~~~
Generation 86	May 31 2022 11:42:31	(current)
Checking /var/log/messages for the restart after system reconfigure, I see several lines that have errors, one of which is CRITICAL:
But I sent the whole log to you privately just in case.
After trying to log in to GNOME, running "sudo herd status" displays pretty much the same as before:
Running "guix system vm config.scm", where config.scm is the same minimal config in comment 2 (https://issues.guix.gnu.org/55488#2), the problem is still there and it is pretty much the same as in the original's report VM session: I log in, but the desktop session never starts; I'm taken back to log in screen. The only difference is that this time the log in form does not present problems on subsequent tries.
Finally, moving files from /var/lib/gdm out of the way does not help. The problem persists.
For what it's worth, this is my machine information:
--8<---------------cut here---------------start------------->8---
190:May 31 12:23:27 localhost shepherd[1]: Service elogind has been started.
220:May 31 12:23:14 localhost elogind[382]: New seat seat0.
264:May 31 12:23:15 localhost elogind[382]: Watching system buttons on /dev/input/event2 (Power Button)
280:May 31 12:23:16 localhost dbus-daemon[349]: [system] Activating service name='org.freedesktop.login1' requested by ':1.1' (uid=0 pid=383 comm="/gnu/store/qpaw2f734zlsq153fkn5afcv4k4fk63z-upower") (using servicehelper)
343:May 31 12:23:20 localhost elogind[382]: Watching system buttons on /dev/input/event1 (Power Button)
415:May 31 12:23:26 localhost elogind[382]: Watching system buttons on /dev/input/event0 (Sleep Button)
604:May 31 12:23:41 localhost dbus-daemon[349]: [system] Failed to activate service 'org.freedesktop.login1': timed out (service_start_timeout=25000ms)
643:May 31 12:23:45 localhost elogind[382]: Watching system buttons on /dev/input/event6 (HUION Huion Tablet_HS611 Consumer Control)
684:May 31 12:23:49 localhost gdm: Gdm: GdmLocalDisplayFactory: Failed to issue method call: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.TimedOut: Failed to activate service 'org.freedesktop.login1': timed out (service_start_timeout=25000ms)
752:May 31 12:24:18 localhost vmunix: [   17.648359] shepherd[1]: Service file-system-/sys/fs/cgroup/elogind has been started.
959:May 31 12:24:33 localhost elogind[382]: New session c1 of user gdm.
--8<---------------cut here---------------end--------------->8---
So it has to do with elogind taking too long to start.  Same with
polkit:
--8<---------------cut here---------------start------------->8---
854:May 31 12:24:10 localhost polkitd[426]: Started polkitd version 0.120
925:May 31 12:24:31 localhost shepherd[1]: [dbus-daemon] ** (accounts-daemon:421): CRITICAL **: 12:24:28.105: error getting polkit authority: Error initializing authority: Error calling StartServiceByName for org.freedesktop.PolicyKit1: Timeout was reached
--8<---------------cut here---------------end--------------->8---
Now, something’s wrong with those timestamps, where shepherd’s message,
which came first, has a timestamp in the future.
Could it be <https://issues.guix.gnu.org/55707>?  At boot time, if you
switch to tty12 (by pressing alt-f12) as soon as it’s available, do you
see messages that get printed pretty slowly, like 4–5 lines per second?
Sorry for not having clearer ideas, but maybe we have a lead…
Thanks,
Ludo’.
Maybe? I recorded a video. Image is low quality, but speed is accurate (I changed to tty12 at second 33):
https://luis-felipe.gitlab.io/media/2022/06/guix-system-ab98b51e-boot-TTY12.webm
At 01:57, it takes a while to start GDM session (that's common; always been like that, I think).
No worries, thanks again for taking a look at it.
Oh yes, that’s exactly what I observed on another machine recently.
I’ll trace to investigate further when I can access it.
In the meantime, could you try the following config, which disables
logging on tty12, to see if it boots quicker?  The config changes is
twofold; first, after the ‘use-modules’ form of your OS config, add:
--8<---------------cut here---------------start------------->8---
(define %syslog.conf
  ;; Custom syslog.conf without /dev/tty12 logging.
  (plain-file "custom-syslog.conf"
              (let loop ((lines (string-split (plain-file-content %default-syslog.conf)
                                              #\newline))
                         (result '()))
                (match lines
                  (()
                   (string-join (reverse result) "\n"))
                  ((head . tail)
                   (if (string-contains head "/dev/tty12")
                       (loop tail result)         ;drop this line
                       (loop tail (cons head result))))))))
--8<---------------cut here---------------end--------------->8---
Second, in the ‘services’ field of your config, replace
‘%desktop-services’ with:
--8<---------------cut here---------------start------------->8---
(modify-services %desktop-services
  (syslog-service-type
   _ => (syslog-configuration
         (config-file %syslog.conf))))
--8<---------------cut here---------------end--------------->8---
Dunno if it’s silly, but at least it’ll allow us to check whether it’s
just the framebuffer that’s slowing things down or if it’s something
else.
Thanks for your help!
Ludo’.
It seems nothing changed. I'm still unable to start a GNOME session, and booting time is about the same. I recorded a new video:
Hi,
Indeed.
Here’s another debugging trick; would be great if you could try this:
--8<---------------cut here---------------start------------->8---
(define strace-syslogd
  (program-file "strace-syslogd"
                #~(apply execl #$(file-append strace "/bin/strace")
                         "strace"                 ;argv[0]
                         "-f" "-Tt" "-o" "/syslogd.log" "-s" "80"
                         #$(file-append inetutils "/libexec/syslogd")
                         (cdr (command-line)))))
--8<---------------cut here---------------end--------------->8---
and then:
--8<---------------cut here---------------start------------->8---
    (modify-services %desktop-services
      (syslog-service-type
       _ => (syslog-configuration
             (syslogd strace-syslogd))))
--8<---------------cut here---------------end--------------->8---
This creates a log file, /syslogd.log, which will allow us to see the
time it takes syslogd to read from /proc/kmsg and hopefully to determine
the origin of delays.
TIA!
Ludo’.
I tried this on a machine I have access to that exhibits this slowness,
and here’s what I get (excerpt that spans 2+ seconds of syslogd
activity):
During that time span, syslogd makes no less than 19 ‘fsync’ calls (not
counting the EINVAL ones), each of which takes between 100ms and
400ms—no wonder it’s slow.  (This machine has a low-grade spinning HDD.)
There are two things we can do:
  1. Use ‘fdatasync’ rather than ‘fsync’;
  2. Explicitly disable syncing for some of the log files by prepending
     a hyphen right before the file name in syslogd.conf (info
     "(inetutils) syslogd invocation").
I’ll give that a try and report back.
Turns out ‘fdatasync’ is about as expensive:
--8<---------------cut here---------------start------------->8---
   1234:301   19:22:00 fdatasync(6)             = 0 <0.398749>
   1245:301   19:22:01 fdatasync(5)             = 0 <0.183503>
   1252:301   19:22:01 fdatasync(6)             = 0 <0.230854>
   1254:301   19:22:02 fdatasync(5)             = 0 <0.248839>
   1261:301   19:22:02 fdatasync(6)             = 0 <0.181513>
   1263:301   19:22:02 fdatasync(5)             = 0 <0.141267>
   1270:301   19:22:02 fdatasync(6)             = 0 <0.131548>
   1272:301   19:22:02 fdatasync(5)             = 0 <0.124369>
   1279:301   19:22:02 fdatasync(6)             = 0 <0.121414>
--8<---------------cut here---------------end--------------->8---
Tested with:
--8<---------------cut here---------------start------------->8---
(define inetutils/fdatasync
  (package/inherit inetutils
    (version (string-append (package-version inetutils) ".fdatasync"))
    (source (origin
              (inherit (package-source inetutils))
              (modules '((guix build utils)))
              (snippet
               '(substitute* "src/syslogd.c"
                  (("fsync") "fdatasync")))))))
--8<---------------cut here---------------end--------------->8---
It still makes more sense than ‘fsync’ though.
Tried this (in addition to ‘fdatasync’):
--8<---------------cut here---------------start------------->8---
(define %default-syslog.conf
  (plain-file "syslog.conf" "
     # Log all error messages, authentication messages of
     # level notice or higher and anything of level err or
     # higher to the console.
     # Don't log private authentication messages!
     *.alert;auth.notice;authpriv.none      -/dev/console
     # Log anything (except mail) of level info or higher.
     # Don't log private authentication messages!
     *.info;mail.none;authpriv.none          /var/log/messages
     *.=debug                               -/var/log/debug
     # Same, in a different place.
     *.info;mail.none;authpriv.none         -/dev/tty12
     # The authpriv file has restricted access.
     authpriv.*                              /var/log/secure
     # Log all the mail messages in one place.
     mail.*                                 -/var/log/maillog
"))
--8<---------------cut here---------------end--------------->8---
In addition to the hyphens, notice that now only debugging info goes to
/var/log/debug (previously everything going to /var/log/messages would
also go to /var/log/debug, which is kinda silly).
This halves the number of ‘fdatasync’ calls and thus doubles the
throughput, but we’re still spending ~0.1s on ‘fdatasync’ for each line,
which is slow.
So the next solution is to not ‘fdatasync’ on /var/log/messages either:
--8<---------------cut here---------------start------------->8---
(define %default-syslog.conf
  (plain-file "syslog.conf" "
     # Log all error messages, authentication messages of
     # level notice or higher and anything of level err or
     # higher to the console.
     # Don't log private authentication messages!
     *.alert;auth.notice;authpriv.none      -/dev/console
     # Log anything (except mail) of level info or higher.
     # Don't log private authentication messages!
     *.info;mail.none;authpriv.none         -/var/log/messages
     # Log \"debug\"-level entries and nothing else.
     *.=debug                               -/var/log/debug
     # Same, in a different place.
     *.info;mail.none;authpriv.none         -/dev/tty12
     # The authpriv file has restricted access.
     # 'fsync' the file after each line.
     authpriv.*                              /var/log/secure
     # Log all the mail messages in one place.
     mail.*                                 -/var/log/maillog
"))
--8<---------------cut here---------------end--------------->8---
With this, the system boots much more quickly.
I’m tempted to commit the above syslog.conf.  From a look at the code
and doc, it seems that neither rsyslog nor systemd-journald does
anything like “fsync after each logged line”, so the config above sounds
like a reasonable default (at any rate, the current default is
definitely unreasonable on slow spinning disks).
I’m curious to see if it fixes your other boot-up issues, timeouts and
all, Luis.
I see you already tried this on the other machine, but I gave this a try too just in case and sent the log to you privately. I'll try the other tricks next.
Do I simply put both definitions (inetutils/fdatasync and %default-syslog.conf) in my system config and reconfigure...? Because I tried that and nothing seems to change.
Or, once defined, do I have to use inetutils/fdatasync and %default-syslog.conf somewhere in my system packages...?
Sorry, I wasn’t clear.  Let’s forget about ‘inetutils/fdatasync’ because
it doesn’t have a measurable impact AFAICS.
In your config file, you first put:
--8<---------------cut here---------------start------------->8---
(define %new-default-syslog.conf
  (plain-file "syslog.conf" "
     # Log all error messages, authentication messages of
     # level notice or higher and anything of level err or
     # higher to the console.
     # Don't log private authentication messages!
     *.alert;auth.notice;authpriv.none      -/dev/console
     # Log anything (except mail) of level info or higher.
     # Don't log private authentication messages!
     *.info;mail.none;authpriv.none         -/var/log/messages
     # Log \"debug\"-level entries and nothing else.
     *.=debug                               -/var/log/debug
     # Same, in a different place.
     *.info;mail.none;authpriv.none         -/dev/tty12
     # The authpriv file has restricted access.
     # 'fsync' the file after each line.
     authpriv.*                              /var/log/secure
     # Log all the mail messages in one place.
     mail.*                                 -/var/log/maillog
"))
--8<---------------cut here---------------end--------------->8---
Then, you replace ‘%desktop-services’ with:
--8<---------------cut here---------------start------------->8---
(modify-services %desktop-services
  (syslog-service-type
   _ => (syslog-configuration
         (config-file %new-default-syslog.conf))))
--8<---------------cut here---------------end--------------->8---
Thanks for testing!
Ludo’.
This does reduce the time it takes to get to GDM log in screen from GRUB. It used to be around 2:35 minutes, but now it takes around 1:25 minutes, which is nice.
Unfortunately, though, I still can't start a GNOME session. I logged in, and stared at a blackish screen for about 5 minutes. Nothing happened :)
It turns out the problem is related to user services. I just disabled my user services, rebooted, and GNOME session started.
I only have one user service defined in ~/.config/shepherd/init.scm as follows
~~~
;;; Definition of my user-level services.
(use-modules (shepherd service))

;;; SERVICE DEFINITIONS
;;; ===================

(define rygel
  (make <service>
    #:provides '(rygel)
    #:docstring "Run the Rygel media server."
    #:start (make-forkexec-constructor '("rygel"))
    #:stop (make-kill-destructor)
    #:respawn? #t))

;;; REGISTER SERVICES
;;; =================

(register-services rygel)

;;; START SERVICES
;;; ==============

(start rygel)

;;; Send shepherd to the background.
(action 'shepherd 'daemonize)
~~~
And I call "shepherd" in the ~/.profile file. This never posed a problem until my recent system generations from April to date, though, where I was never able to start a GNOME session. So I wonder what's going on now...
For what it's worth, the only error I see in ~/.config/shepherd/shepherd.log is this
2022-04-07 11:01:57 system-error("getpgid" "~A" ("No existe el proceso") (3))
"No existe el proceso" meaning, "The process doesn't exist". This error has occurred several times since 2021, though.
Alright, so commit 264ca9452fae827d6621b28b8972f4b1d68401a1 closes this
particular issue (#55707).
Hmm OK.  I’m not sure what’s going on; are you sure ‘rygel’ is in $PATH
when shepherd starts?
Anyway, this looks like “not-a-bug” from the perspective of Guix.
WDYT?
BTW, I’d encourage you to write a service for Guix Home for Rygel and to
use Guix Home (*then* if you have problems that’ll be a bug from the
perspective of Guix :-)).
Thanks,
Ludo’.
No, but I know rygel is in my user profile; I can start it from a terminal. And it works when I go back to a previous system generation...
So yeah, I'm closing this bug then and I'll be starting rygel manually for now.
