Hello,

Attached is a proposed logo.  SVG available at
<http://www.fdn.fr/~lcourtes/software/guix/guix-logo.svg> (browsers may
not display correctly, though, but Inkscape should.)

The black circled capital lambda is meant to suggest functional
programming and the battle for freedom.

I think that it needs some polishing, but I like the idea.  I suggest to
add a perspective (e.g., lambda can step out of the circle).

Also, could you convert it to curves?  This version will appear
differently depending on the installed fonts.

I'm attaching my version.  Basically, it's "NixOS reversed."  Lambdas
are free (i.e., not connected) and colors are warmer.

(You can use Inkscape to open the file.)

Looks nice, but I find too close to that of Nix (and it loses some of

Another idea might to start from the stylish gnu of Gnus [1], mirror it,
and turn its left leg into a lambda.  Something like that.

It's important to get the meaning very quickly.  That's why lower-case
lambdas are so common.

"It's important that this process has a deadline (perhaps the end of
the year?), so that we can make progress, we can hopefully quickly
adopt the new logo.

If you'd prefer we adopt the logo now, then this is also fine with me
as long as we can agree that incremental improvements of the logo are
still possible and even desired." [3]

I created a new version.  (What license should be used?)

These drop-like objects represent profiles.  The logo shows that it's
possible to create several profiles and to roll-back to the initial

I tried it and I think that the current version is better.  Here's why I
don't want to use Junction (in this particular case):

  1. It's too thin; the logo just falls apart.  I can't use a different
     weight because there's only one.  Even if I adjust the stroke in
     Inkscape, it won't look good.

  2. It's a humanist typeface.  Have a closer look at G and x.  These
     letters have some script-like elements.  They don't fit because
     the word is short.

Anyway, I think that there is room for improvement.  Do you have any
other suggestions?

Not sure about your distro, but the following should work on
Debian-based systems (like gNewSense):

  1. Check '/etc/fonts/fonts.conf'.  It should contain font-related
     directories (like '/usr/local/share/fonts').

  2. Copy the file (e.g., 'Junction.otf') to the right directory.

  3. Run 'fc-cache -f -v' to regenerate the cache files.

symlinks.  And green is used for executables.  That's why I picked them.

also says that we have to "determine what the 'source code' is" if we
want to use the GNU GPL.

What does Guile use?

Could you perhaps send several examples with a sample of sans-sérif
that you have?  :-)

GPL + GFDL (but I’m the one who made that choice) :

I think it covers all our practical use cases, and there’s not much at
stake anyway.  WDYT?

Anyway, I think it’d be good to converge quickly, so could you come up
with just a few variants of this design, so we can choose from there and

I've attached the file.  The one on the left is the current version with
"more pastel colors."  This is my favorite version because (1) the
typeface is clean and (2) the contrast between the drops and the word
isn't sharp (that's what I meant by "too thin").

Also, the other versions require some (tiny) adjustments.  So if you
decide to use a different version, it'll be necessary to check some
issues.

Yes, of all of them, I also prefer to initial one.  (I now see what you
meant by “too thin”, though maybe tighter inter-letter spacing could
have helped.)

One last thing: it occurred to me that it may be wise to add “GNU”
somewhere (because of “the GNU system” and so on), maybe above the “u”,
or below the “G”, in a smaller typeface.  (I understand this is
additional work, and hope you won’t kill me. ;-))

By the way, I fixed the outlines of G and u, but there's room for
improvement.  I used the 'Stroke' menu to increase the weight.  It would
be better to redraw the whole thing in FontForge.  However, it's not in
my short-term to-do list; there are so many things to implement.

It doesn’t blend well on the main page.  I guess a bit of CSS would help
(notably to leave more space around it), but I’m not sure how to do it,
nor how that would interact gnu.org’s original CSS.

To leave some space around the logo, I'd write:

But my CSS is a bit rusty. Plus, purists would want that to be in the 
CSS file :)

Yeah, I think it's better to the left as well.

Assuming that's the decision... it's currently in an href tag and it
doesn't really need to be. I'm also assuming that the right margin
between the logo and the text is what you want to increase. Something
like this below is all that's needed, adjusting the margins to be as
big or little as you desire. You can even add in other things like
margin-left, margin-bottom or margin-top if you want to specify values
for those.

Yep.  :-)  That’s how gnu.org and nongnu.org web pages are managed, and
I suspect it’s not going to change overnight.

If you look at the repo, it actually uses server-side header/footer
inclusion, like this:

actually, the logo looks very much like the anarchist symbol, I 
spontaneously interpreted the lambda as an A. This might be understood by 
your "battle for freedom", but is maybe a bit extreme.

In Nikita's version, the detached lambdas are clearly identifiable. I also 
agree with using a bit of colour.
