Hello,

the client part is working, I just added xeyes as a test application in the
xorg branch. So now we should be able to package applications requiring X!

Exceeeelent, congratulations!

Now that xeyes works, you could try to uncomment the X dependencies in
emacs.scm and see what happens. :-)

I checked out the xorg branch, and tried to install xeyes:

$ ./pre-inst-env ./scripts/guix package -i xeyes

This hangs, I attached the error log. It seems like the mirrors for
libpthread-stubs-0.3 are broken.

Cyril.

The xorg ftp mirrors are broken for packages developed in the xcb project,
but the http mirrors used to work. I just replaced them by the direct url
of the xcb project.

Maybe it’s expected that x.org doesn’t mirror files from the XCB project?

It looks for a toolkit such as gtk:
checking for xaw3d... no
checking for libXaw... configure: error: No X toolkit could be found.
If you are sure you want Emacs compiled without an X toolkit, pass
  --with-x-toolkit=no
to configure. Otherwise, install the development libraries for the toolkit
that you want to use (e.g. Gtk+) and re-run configure.

Does it make sense to compile with --with-x-toolkit=no?

I don’t know, but that would seem weird.

Thanks.

I cannot build xorg-server, though. I'm getting this error:

XKB: Failed to compile keymap
Keyboard initialization failed. This could be a missing or incorrect
setup of xkeyboard-config.

Fatal server error:
Failed to activate core devices.

Please consult the The X.Org Foundation support
          at http://wiki.x.org
  for help.

FAIL: xtest

I tried adding xbcomp and xkeyboard-config to the inputs of xorg-server,
but it did not help.

Note that I do not use a keyboard on this machine, but plugging one does
not solve the problem.

Any idea ?

Cyril.

My understanding is that the server side is not fully baked yet, but the
client side libraries are.

Yes, the xorg-server check fails, which makes it likely that the server
will also not work. I do not see why. Help would be appreciated.

I also added additionally xkbcomp, again without success.

On a positive note: Client-wise, I added the dependency to texlive, so now
we have xdvi, and I am rather confident that the client side is working.

Nice! The branch could probably be merged in ‘core-updates’ now. WDYT?

Let us wait until the end of the week, since I still have a few things to
work on.

After commenting out some packages (see the latest git logs), all remaining
ones compile except for xf86-input-evdev, which requires udev. xorg-server,
as said before, does not pass its tests.

font-adobe100dpi, font-adobe75dpi, font-misc-misc, font-schumacher-misc,
xcursor-themes, xf86-input-joystick, xf86-input-synaptics and xf86-input-
vmmouse do not install, as they try to install files outside their own
package tree. For some of them, these are only header files. xf86-input-
joystick, for instance, tries to install joystick-properties.h in ...-xorg-
server-1.12.2/include/xorg/. I think it would be enough to have the file
copied into ...-input-joystick-1.6.1/include/xorg, right?

One could also work a bit on removing explicit inputs that are made
superfluous by propagation. For instance, xinput currently has the inputs
libxrandr and libxext. But libxext is propagated by libxrandr, so it could
be removed from the inputs.

Sure, no problem.

OK. I think the server is something that we can fix later. The first
milestone was to get the client libs working.

Yes. Apparently in Nixpkgs this is achieved by running:

  make install "appdefaultdir=$out/share/X11/app-defaults"

(See <https://github.com/NixOS/nixpkgs/blob/master/pkgs/servers/x11/xorg/builder.sh>.)
