The problem is related to this known issue:

https://github.com/NixOS/nixpkgs/issues/119029

which is fixed in version 3.3 of the client.

Removing the directories

~/.local/share/Nextcloud
~/.cache/Nextcloud

resolved the issue (at least temporarily).
