I checked GNOME, awesome, xfce4, OpenBox and all do not find the
fonts. I suppose this is an gtk(?) issue.

I never got the Japanese fonts working on GuixSD by following our info manual, and this was before those updates.

Can you tell me exactly or roughly what you tried and what errors (not specific, in general) you
see in the current functioning system? It would be useful to get a clear view on
languages / localization specific issues to improve the system.

I don't recall seeing any particular errors, I had simply followed
section 2.6.3 X11 Fonts [1] and installed the suggested fonts using:
"guix package -i font-adobe-source-han-sans:jp".

Japanese characters were still displayed as boxes (with unicode? in
them) in any software I tried following a system reboot (gnucash,
icecat, etc.).

The same page (presumably http://www.bbc.com/) renders fine for me; no
boxes, all glyphs appear to be rendered correctly.  In addition, system
fonts appear to be selectable for me in icecat.  See attached files for
screenshots.

I have not run 'guix pull' in the last week or two.  Would you like me
to tell you anything about my system's configuration that might shed
light on the issue?  I'm going to update my system later today, so if
there are any problems (or not), I'll let you know.

FWIW, Japanese fonts work for me in all applications I have tried so
far, which includes Icecat, GNOME terminal, graphical emacs, and Gedit,
all on GNOME.  I don't recall doing anything that wasn't described in
the manual.

If you're interested in troubleshooting it, I'd like to help you get
Japanese fonts working.  For starters, maybe this information will help:

Well this is odd. And you run GuixSD I assume? I wonder where the source for
fonts being suddenly AWOL lies.
I remember that they used to work.

Well it is worse than icecat now that I have removed every WM/DM but Xfce4.

Most applications still display text, but libreoffice can be seen in the appended screenshot.

I have run 'fc-cache -rfv' and now at least the following happened:

* libreoffice has visible text again
* xfce4-terminal can select every installed font (but does not display every preview of it correct)
* icecat is unchanged

I'm waiting for the profile software update and will look into more effects tomorrow.

I am closing this bugreport as the fonts in Icecat are all visible and selectable now.
jp.wikipedia.org has no problems and this page http://www.alanwood.net/unicode/unicode_samples.html
used to be 95% unicode "boxes", now it displays 100% correcly (if you exclude CJK Unified
Ideographs Extension B, C and some private Area stuff).

Most operating systems have a "post-install" hook which runs fc-cache and other things.
I forget about this, to be reminded of things you used to do years ago is good.

Maybe I should just set a user-cronjob with this and forget about it again.

Another report made by me which might be related to this issue:

I noticed that the copy of Inkscape that I installed through Guix
doesn't include the fonts that are provided by the foreign distro
(Trisquel 7) so far, although it does include the fonts that are inside
"$XDG_DATA_HOME/fonts" (and children).

What I did to work around the issue is this:

1. Install fontconfig through Guix.

2. Make the file "$XDG_CONFIG_HOME/fontconfig/fonts.conf" with contents:

# Begin of file
<fontconfig>
        <dir>/usr/share/fonts</dir>
        <dir>/usr/local/share/fonts</dir>
</fontconfig>
# End of file

3. Do:

$ fc-cache -rfv

The true issue seems to be, however, that the Guix recipe for fontconfig
seems to be providing the "system-wide" fonts.conf file, which confuses
some applications installed through Guix. Guix's fontconfig system-wide
fontconfig configurations are found at ".guix-profile/fonts" (and
children).

However, this doesn't seem to affect software installed through other
means like the foreign distro's package manager, as I can see with the
copy of LibreOffice I have installed through Trisquel 7's default
repositories. I haven't tried installing "unique" fonts available
through Guix only, but I can see that all the foreign system's fonts are
recoginized by LibreOffice (according to my tests).

Or you can do "the inverse", by doing this:

1. *Do not* install fontconfig from Guix, but make sure to have fontcofig
installed in your foreign distro.

2. Make the file "$XDG_CONFIG_HOME/fontconfig/fonts.conf" with contents:

<fontconfig>
        <dir>~/.guix-profile/share/fonts</dir>
</fontconfig>
# End of file

3. Do:

$ fc-cache -rfv

So, the way I see it is that we have to tell the user that he must make
such "$XDG_CONFIG_HOME/fontconfig/fonts.conf" and choose whether he'll
be using the foreign distro's fontconfig or the fontconfig from Guix,
and chnage this "fonts.conf" file I just mentioned accordingly. If
people agree on, I can contribute with this documentation.

For those willing to explore the issue more: I read the user
documentation for Fontconfig, and it has a variable called
FONTCONFIG_PATH, but it doesn't accept multiple values separated by
colon, it only picks the first value and ignores the rest (I tested it
with `FONTCONFIG_PATH="/etc/fonts:$GUIX_PROFILE/etc/fonts" fc-cache
-rfv` and with `FONTCONFIG_PATH="$GUIX_PROFILE/etc/fonts:/etc/fonts"
fc-cache -rfv` and they resulted differently, but the only common point
was the fonts found inside "$XDG_DATA_HOME/fonts" because both places
referenced in FONTCONFIG_PATH paths have a "fonts.conf" file that has a
part similar to "<dir prefix="xdg">fonts</dir>").

Yep, that's why we think of GuixSD and Guix on other systems when
solutions are thought of.
We need some post-install hook (even if it's just a service or mcron
job as a service) which runs the fontcache rfv, comparable to what
other systems such as Gentoo do.
