  ? I would be surprised if any database interface returned a
  string, when the database column was declared an int,
  so I don't quite understand this ...

That would be the SQL way :-) I haven't looked at guile-dbi; perhaps it
has the critical conversions already.

guile-pg does support pg large objects.
