[-- Attachment #1.1: Type: text/plain, Size: 463 bytes --]

On my Fink installation - Mac OS - there are two Guile packages.
One is just "Guile", the info says it's version 1.4, the maintainer is
"Maintainer: None <fink-devel@lists.sourceforge.net> ".
The other is "Guile16", the info says it's version 1.6.4, the
maintainer is "Maintainer: Peter O'Gorman <peter@pogma.com> ".
Could anybody tell me which to prefer ? I mean what are the
differences, and how can it stand like that both of them ?
Cheers.

Francis,

For new work, Guile 1.6.4 is preferable in all ways. Guile 1.4 is
probably just there because your installation includes a Guile-using
program that was written to 1.4 and has not been upgraded to the 1.6.x
series. (Unfortunately 1.6.x was not completely back-compatible w.r.t.
1.4.)

Regards,
      Neil

One might note that the 1.4.x branch is still bugfixed and maintained
by TTN over at http://www.glug.org/people/ttn/software/guile/

Dunno if Fink pulls down TTN's fixed 1.4.x or GNU's last 1.4.x (from
June 2000).

I wonder what packaged programs still have the 1.4 dependency? Come to
thing of it, I wonder what programs in general have a Guile dependency.
I suppose if I knew my way around the Debian webpage, it would tell me
the answer.

At least for guile 1.6 we have:

  $ apt-cache rdepends guile-1.6-libs
  guile-1.6-libs
  Reverse Depends:
    lilypond
    gnurobots
    gnotime
    drgeo
    xbindkeys
    trackballs
    texmacs
    snd-gtk-alsa
    snd-gtk
    serveez
    penggy
    mpb-mpi
    mpb
    mdk
    mailutils
    lilypond
    libswig1.3.21-guile
    libgwrapguile1
    libgeda20
    libctl2scm16
    gwave
    guile-pg
    guile-db
    guile-1.6
    gnucash
    gnubik
    gnome-games
    glame
    geda-utils
    geda-gsymcheck
    geda-gschem
    geda-gnetlist
    drgeo
    bobot++
    beast
    autogen

For Debian (sid):

apt-rdepends guile-common:
guile-common
  Reverse Depends: guile1.4 (1:1.4-26)
guile1.4
  Reverse Depends: guile1.4-slib (= 1:1.4-26)
  Reverse Depends: libguile-dev (= 1:1.4-26)
guile1.4-slib
  Reverse Depends: libautounit-guile (0.15.2-5)
libguile-dev

Seems like there is nothing besides libautounit-guile:

apt-cache show libautounit-guile
Package: libautounit-guile
Priority: optional
Section: interpreters
Installed-Size: 65
Maintainer: James LewisMoss <dres@debian.org>
Architecture: all
Source: autounit
Version: 0.15.2-5
Depends: guile-1.6-slib | guile1.4-slib
Filename: pool/main/a/autounit/libautounit-guile_0.15.2-5_all.deb
Size: 12334
MD5sum: b991215b0b0d182c78143df19153b74c
Description: Guile Unit Testing framework
This package provides the guile libraries to unit test guile programs.

So even this seems to be able to run with bothe versions...

Guile 1.4 is in Debian probably for users using programs not yet
ported to 1.6...
