I've been waiting for a 1.8 debian package before starting work again
on my libxml2/libxslt binding.
Anybody know why it's taking so long to get a debian of 1.8 into etch
or sid?
Is anybody working on it?

The issue is that I was waiting on SLIB. The current Debian Guile
(1.6) works fine with the recent versions of SLIB, but SLIB's
guile.init hasn't been updated for 1.8. I've been talking with Aubrey
Jaffer about it, but we haven't come to any conclusion yet. We've
been talking about changing the way SLIB is handled within Guile.
If I don't come up with a solution soon, I can just upload 1.8
packages without SLIB support.

Perhaps you could upload it and hold it in unstable until you sort out the
SLIB issue? I'd like to install it on my Ubuntu system, but have been
waiting for a Debian source package to build from.
cheers,
John

I don't think it'll be a problem. I'll just coordinate the issue with
the Debian SLIB maintainer and guile-1.8 won't support SLIB until
Guile does upstream.
However, first I'm trying to resolve the popen.test issue being
discussed on guile-devel.
