...anyone missed the announcement, Debian is going to freeze packages 
for Lenny quite soon.  So, I humbly request that those responsible for 
such things get the latest and greatest of everything packaged up for 
Lenny before that happens.  It is much easier to use various things, and 
to get others to accept their use, when they are included in a disto, so 
that they can be installed the "official" way.

If there is anything I can do to help, let me know.  My Debian packaging 
know-how is practically nil, but I learn fast.

Thanks for the reminder.  For core Guile I already had this in mind,
and I hope that we will be able to release a 1.8.6 that builds on all
architectures, and which is in time for the Lenny freeze.

But on the other hand...

- It shouldn't be the end of the world if we miss the freeze.  There
is backports, after all.

- I worry slightly that we are ignoring the other distros!  If users
of other distros would like to pass on their freeze dates, please do
so.

Well, lenny is now frozen (http://lwn.net/Articles/291741/), and core
Guile has 2 release-critical (RC) bugs against it.

Any DDs out there (and Rob, of course): fixes for RC bugs are still
allowed, and I believe that all the fixes you need are available in
Guile's git repository - so please apply and NMU if you can so that
Guile stays in lenny!

For some reason, it's 1.8.4 that's in `testing' now, although the 1.8.5
package has been available for some time.  It gives us the impression
that we have a fast release cycle.  ;-)

Looking now at the logs at
http://buildd.debian.org/pkg.cgi?pkg=guile-1.8, it seems that:

amd64, arm, armel, mips, mipsel, powerpc, s390: are all good
hppa: is still getting the broken pipe / seg fault when building
guile-procedures.texi
ia64: is getting illegal instruction in test-unwind
i386, m68k, sparc: are unclickable, so I can't tell

The hppa symptom is the same as (mips, mipsel, powerpc) were seeing
before the latest patches.  What kind of architecture is hppa?  Is
there any chance that the patches somehow didn't take for that arch?

Certainly.  Just wish I'd done it sooner.  In any case, I've notified
debian-release, and presuming we can work out the remaining issues, I
think things may be OK.

One place to ask questions would probably be debian-hppa
(http://www.debian.org/ports/hppa), and there's also the build log.
In addition, I may be able to run some code on an hppa machine if we
can figure out something appropriate.

The patches should have made it.  You can see the exact patch in the
new source package in
debian/patches/improve-stack-direction-test.diff.  It should be very
close to the upstream version.

Thanks, I asked there, and someone pointed out my (rather silly)
mistake.  Fix is here:

That doesn't look like a Guile-specific problem, though, does it?  The
first failure occurs in a perfectly straightforward configure.in check
for clog10!  Build machine out of disk space, perhaps?

For the rest...  There is a remaining bug in test-round in m68k:

lt-test-round: test-round.c:86: test_scm_c_round: Assertion
`scm_c_round (x) == want' failed.

Will that prevent the upload from reaching testing?  If so, I'll look
into a fix.

All of the other architectures, including experimental and ports, are
looking OK!  (If I'm understanding the logs correctly.)

Now ia64 is only failing because of:

dpkg-gencontrol: error: current host architecture 'ia64' does not
appear in package's architecture list (alpha amd64 arm armel hppa i386
m68k mips mipsel powerpc s390 sparc kfreebsd-i386 kfreebsd-amd64)

it stands now, I don't think this will affect guile with respect to
lenny.

Note that if I recall correctly, m68k isn't a release critical
architecture for lenny, so although I think it would be good to fix
this, it may not affect guile's inclusion in lenny.
