Is there anyone on this list with the expertise to adapt the attached (simply.scm) file to Guile?
I cannot do it myself, and I do not wish to take credit for anyone's work, but if someone could volunteer to make the attached file work with Guile it would be a great service to the Scheme community around Guile as there would be an excellent resource in the form of that book (Simply Scheme) to start learning the basics from.
Do consider.
I have also included the contents of that file below;
;;; simply.scm version 3.13 (8/11/98)

;;; This file uses Scheme features we don't talk about in _Simply_Scheme_.
;;; Read at your own risk.

Is there something specific that isn’t working for you when using this
in Guile?

Everything. Just running the other code which calls this throws-up errors I can't comprehend.

I saved “simply.scm” to a directory, went to that directory and ran:

    guile --no-auto-compile -l simply.scm

This spawned a working REPL that I could use to run the first couple of
examples from the book:

    scheme@(guile-user)> (word 'comp 'uter)
    $1 = computer

How are you loading the file? Which example are you trying?

That was kind of you to have shared your experience and successfully getting those examples to run.

I was using the "load" method as is usually the case.

Thanks again,

Try running the "acronym" example at; https://people.eecs.berkeley.edu/~bh/ssch1/showing.html

I followed your method of invoking Guile with "simply.scm" at the command-line, got a new REPL.
Then executed "scheme@(guile-user)> (word 'comp 'uter)" and got the error message below;
;;; <stdin>:2:0: warning: possibly unbound variable `word'
ice-9/boot-9.scm:1669:16: In procedure raise-exception:
Unbound variable: word

Entering a new prompt. Type `,bt' for a backtrace or `,q' to continue.

Followed by the command prompt "scheme@(guile-user) [1]>".

Occurs to me that I could be doing something wrong, would you please send in your "simply.scm" as an attachment in reply to this email?

Thanks,

~Mayuresh

It works for me using 'load' and with this example.

I copied the text from your original message. The attachment had
something funny with the linebreaks, so I didn’t use it. Indeed, if I
try to use the attachment directly, I get the same error as you. This
is because Guile reads the entire file as comment, so none of the
definitions from “simply.scm” get loaded.

You should take a close look at the “simply.scm” file you are using. I
bet there’s something funny with the linebreaks on your end, too.
Sometimes that sort of thing can be obscured by text editors and mail
clients, so please find attached the copied-and-pasted version. Just in
case. :)
